Hey guys!

Okay, so I've got a Canon 70-300 IS USM... well, I haven't actually GOT it... but I'm using the 75-300 IS until the 70-300 IS arrives through my door next week.

Now, I've been playing around and at 300mm it doesn't got as far as I expected it too.

I mean I could be standing away say 10 ft from something, and it will zoom in pretty close...

But I'm imagining Lions in Kruger National Park being a little further away than that.

I've been looking for pictures taken with a 70-300mm and it seems you guys where able to get soooo close to a subject.

Does that mean you were just close to it in the first place?

Any tips you can give me on using this lens?!

Thanks :)
Amnesia

Might be a good lens ... ... as a Darksider I couldn't possibly comment ... :D ... but for Kruger you will need 500 to 600mm minimum to get decent shots ... ;) ... will a x2TC work with your new lens ...

HTH ... ;)

:p

You just can't have a long enough lens sometimes, but the truth is regardless of how much you spend on lenses and which one you use - getting closer always gets you the best shots. ;)

I'm imagining you'd want to be a lot further away than 10 feet ;)

POssibly or the images could also have been cropped a bit. Like Ven says though long glass really is the answer. A convertor might work too, not sure about compatability with that lens though.

Hmm... so after extensive advice - it turns out I still haven't got a decent enough lens lol.

Never mind hey!

I've heard a number of people have travelled to national parks with this sort of lens.

At least it has more range than my Sigma 24-70!

EDIT: Note to self - press Submit before answering phone.....

Somebody did post that a very long lens won't be much good in SA because the bush/scrub is pretty dense.

It is a fine lens. Dont beat yourself up. Anything longer than 300mm costs stacks (£xxxx.xx) .

If you really want to get closer then the Kenko 2X tc should fit as it doesnt have sticky out bits like the canon one (that said it's reputed to be quite as good), but its cheaper.

Lions are pretty big critters, a bit different to long tailed tits, so you'll probably do better than you think. ;)

Also the 1.4 TC will get you to 420mm and the 2XTC gets you 600mm. You'll lose one or two stops depending on which converter you use, but I would imagine you're going to have good strong light out there. :)

Personally I think you have got a really good compromise lens imgo ... ... but to avoid ultimate disappointment on a trip to Kruger I would definitely beg steal or borrow a TC ...

I'm very pleased I've decided to purchase this particular lens.

Now I have a 24-70 for portrait/close up and a 100-300mm for things a little further.

I really hope my photography will start to take steps forward with the equipment (so-be-it limited at the moment).

I'll looking into teleconverters.

Expensive? :)

And when you say I'll lose one or two stops, that should matter in these circumstances as i'll be donig the safaris during the day time when the sun is out.

With a TC, do you just attach it to the lens as and when you want to use it? So I came all the way out to 100mm with a 2xtc it'll actually be 200mm?

Thanks :)

Relatively inexpensive actually ... for what they do ... :D

You are right about losing stops in Africa ... such fabulous light most of the time (especially during the day ... :D) it shouldn't worry you at all ... ;)

And about fitting them ... Correct; and yes 100 becomes 200 with a x2 ...

:p

Thanks Venom :) I'll let you know how I get on.

Old git - Just read your post, didn't notice you'd left a comment! Thanks for having faith in the lens lol :P

A Kenko 1.4 pro 300 DG definately A'F's on a 70-300 is usm though its a bit slow on smaller ( narrower) appatures
I see that they are even doing them in white now!

The original Kenko teleconvertors are white, the newer DG ones with digital coatings are black.

You can buy them (the DG ones) for £80 from Onestop Digital which includes delivery, and in the unlikely event of being charged tax and fees they will also refund it. They come highly recommended, and I would echo that having used them myself to get the 1.4x version. Despite being delivered by Hong Kong post it was posted Friday and arrived the Monday which even a courier would struggle to beat.

Michael.
