I have just downloaded Google mobile maps to my n97 mini and run the software setup and tried it out..............my word its slow compared to nokia Ovi maps, anyone else have it and have the sluggish problems

Nokia Maps is native Symbian O/S, Google is running via Java VM.

Google Maps need to download map data over-the-air, Nokia Maps have UK maps already built in so doesn't need to go over-the-air for map display.

Nokia (Ovi) maps already has UK map data pre-loaded.

Initial fix is done via Cell Network Id, so you get an intitial rough guess quickly.

GPS fix can take a few seconds (longer if you don't get positioning data from your network), can take from 5 seconds up to 2 minutes if you are out of network coverage.

What bit is slow? Map rendering or gps fix?

GPS fix it keeps positioning me in Lincoln about 30 miles away and takes about 5 mins to find that even with the postcode entry

Just tried the satellite view (photos) and that is spot on and very fast its the sat nav that seems to be up the spout

If its putting you 30 miles away, in that case, it'll be using your network cellID as a rough guess. I'm assuming you are testing this indoor.

Be care with data charges - downloading satellite views can be very costly unless you've got a decent data rate with your mobile network.

Yes I am testing indoors and its on a permanently connected contract so data is free all the time and just to show off:lol: if i dont go over my tarrif limit any given month I dont pay anything  ....strange but true

Heres my latest bill

I actually find it the other way round. Google usually manages to get a GPS fix faster on my E71. I find I often have to physically switch on the GPS app as well as Maps for Ovi to get me an accurate fix.

Can't beat the preinstalled Ovi maps for day to day use though and Google seems hell-bent on complicating their app with all those layers. Silly really. Simple always works for me.

It does seem over complicated for a phone app so it was removed and I will stick with Ovi maps:thumbs:

Mine found it by postcode and number, Tom

Have you downloaded the latest one as the last one wont find you like I found out
