Google Drive to offer 5GB of Storage

This is brilliant news! There are so many services out there like this, however I am some times a bit weary to use them, they could close down, get hacked etc... Google are obviously a massive company and I would feel confident to use their cloud service!

I'll definately be signing up to this! :)

Thanks for the heads up mate!

Announced by Google here.

Could be nice timing for me, the collaborate feature in particular.

Google play store did an update for me tonight on my phone of which one was the Google drive download.

Went in and clicked the "notify me" button so they email me when my storage space is ready.

Popped it on the tablet too.
Happy days!

Seems googles T&Cs are quite as clear as Dropbox and co - slightly odd wording on who owns anything you upload to it.

I use Google Music to store all my music and currently a few files in Dropbox

Drive has the benefit of being able to mark files for offline access on android which you can't do with dropbox, but you can use drop sync.

I also have 25Gb free space with Sky Drive which is the biggest bang for the buck and integration with Windows 8 :)

The comment about digital inheritance is interesting, you forget how much the odd digital download here and there adds up to and will todays newborns see a CD/ DVD.

Just downloaded this for my mac. It installed and then downloaded all my google docs to a folder. Only thing is the files are only links to the web version.

Am i missing something?

Nope, apparently that is good. Lol

great another online storage system when most of the country is still in the dark ages when it comes to their internet connection.. :|
I got "the" mail last week. I have FTTC :D

There's a pic doing the rounds in Twitter about this. As far as I can tell Google claim the right for anything you upload unlike Drop box that states that "your stuff is your stuff". Worth further looking into for me before I jump on the band wagon.

Hi Cyprio, i think ive seen the picture you saw and dug a little to find out more.

The part of google terms of service that is highlighted by the pic mentioned:-

"When you upload or otherwise submit content to our Services, you give Google (and those we work with) a worldwide license to use, host, store, reproduce, modify, create derivative works (such as those resulting from translations, adaptations or other changes we make so that your content works better with our Services), communicate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute such content."

This part is hinted by the blogger as googles attempt to steal your intellectual property. These blogs dont seem to have read the previous sentence:-

"Some of our Services allow you to submit content. You retain ownership of any intellectual property rights that you hold in that content. In short, what belongs to you stays yours."

HTH!

I've found the same t's and c's that Phil has, and that suggests nothing more than Google would require to enable you to use their provided services on your own data (e.g. translate).

What isn't mentioned in the t's and c's but I've found mentioned elsewhere (nothing definitively sourced though - it's mentioned/linked in one of the earlier linked stories/articles for example) is that for non-business accounts Google may search your stored documents on Drive to further tailor your search results in Google and to further target you with adverts. That's more concerning, it's just not clear what Google could do commercially with data derived from your documents.

Just downloaded google drive for android. Was looking forward to getting a folder of text documents in my google drive folder synced to my android. Guess what? You can't sync a folder...

First time i've used this emoticon, and one won't suffice:-

:bang: :bang: :bang:
