Hi
I am off to Australia shortly for a holiday. Ideally I would be taking my Canon full frame camera along with the 24-105 F4L lens plus accessories. However i dont want to take all this weight and expensive kit so wondering whats on the market in the compact area.

The ideal camera would take RAW format, capable of long night exposure, can be tripod mounted and a zoom lens which goes wide.
Any recommendations

How wide?

Greater than 24mm. Large sensor size and ideally wifi as on my 6D i like to put the images onto my phone/ipad while on the go and upload to social media

Depends on what your idea of "travel" size is really. I'm off to Vietnam in October and will be taking a D610, a superzoom and a very wide prime. I will also take a Nikon V1 as my 'small' camera.

I have been looking at FUJI cameras recently, the XM1 in particular which has a crop size sensor and excellent image quality - only £299 for refurbished on the Fuji store with a (very good) kit lens at the moment. I am VERY tempted.

Nikon V1's are proper bargains nowadays, I am constantly astounded by the image quality (which is due to the excellent lenses) and I've managed to take some long exposures without hassle too. My only issue is that shallow DoF isn't really possible but with the f/1.8 normal lens (18.5mm) you can at least get shallow enough to isolate a person.

The other option is M4/3 but I prefer the 3:2 ratio so have never really looked at them.

fuji X-T1, then you have choice of wide angle lens such as there 14mm prime, 18mm prime, 10-24 zoom or there new 18-135 zoom . RAW shooting large APS-C sensor, and good old fashioned screw in cable release ( just love that feature when i had my fuji ) for long expsoure shots..

took this at night with my Fuji long expsoure

dont think theres much with less than 24mm tbh :/ unless you change lenses

fuji X-T1 much too expensive I spent enough money on all my Canon kit so sub £500 is what I am looking for.
Thinking Sony RX100 MK2

ahhh ok as you didnt mention budget wasnt sure.. i guess the fuji x-30 would be along with the sony a possible contender or the fuji x-m1 ( sorry im a fuji fan having owned one lol )

Id say the Canon EOS-M if you couldn't take your DSLR although not sure why you'd leave it behind!

MFT. There is a GF3 with kit lens in the classifieds for £199. Buy a 9-18 for c. £300 and then sell the kit lens if you're over budget.

I would take the DSLR AND get a little XF1 to slip in my pocket.

I've always set my MFT cameras to 3:2. Any loss in pixels is IMVHO insignificant.

5D3 or 1DX if you can't afford Phase One.

I think someone forgot to read and comprehend the original post.

Oh well, takes all sorts :D

Frankly, if you're not carting an easel, canvas and a selection of oil paints, you're just phoning it in.

I was going to say a Nikon D800, or a Hasslebad system.

I took a D800 to Athens and Rome with a 24-70F2.8. It is not that heavy, unless you are a goof, you won't break it as I never broke it in the UK, and the laws of physics in oz are the same as they are here.

Travel with a normal SLR camera is fine

@CarloUK have a read, insure your gear and take it with you. Its for taking pictures, not for preserving in a bag, in a few years you won't have it anyway, sensor tech moves on, but the images you will have for the rest of your life.

It is impressive how many people doubt this, unless they are like pro wedding / sports togs looking for a break from the work's tool.

I've got a mate thats a pro wedding tog, high end market he covers. He has the D4, D800 and D600 and always takes the lot with him in his car, he ended up on holiday covering an event paying for the holiday. I liked that

Having tried lugging a D700 and 28-70, 2 year old daughter (who refuses to go in a pram) and associated kiddy related stuff around in the heat on holiday, I now tend to travel with a Fuji X10 and an IPhone, even though said daughter is now 4 and a lot more mobile. No regrets whatsoever, but my focus (so to speak) on holiday isn't photography!

Don't worry though, the D700 gets plenty of use for the rest of the year......
