Good setup on my 50d?

I am looking at either the Canon 17-55 or the Tamron 17-50 as a wide angle compliment to my lenses so far. I keep reading that in order to get the best from my 50D, I need good quality glass.

Would you consider either of these or both of these to be an ideal lens on my 50D?

Both of them should do you well. a lot of good comments bout the tamron and the canon is supposedly L quality(or very close)

I have read loads of reviews, but just don't seem any closer to a decision. I hope someone on here has either set up and can offer some specifics
