I have a Canon 17-40 F$ but have been thinking should I look for something else?
It would mainly be for Auroras and the odd Milky Way so I was thinking on the Samyang 14 F2.8 but would I be gaining much?
All ideas welcome, cheers

The stop you'll gain will help reduce exposure times (or ISO needed for the same EV) and the extra few mm in width will help you get more in the frame. I use the Tamron 14mm f/2.8 - AF, auto aperture but otherwise fairly similar.

The decrease in focal length will also increase the amount of time you have the shutter open before star trails appear.

There will be a noticeable difference in astro shots.

Thanks both, helps clarify things and looks like I do need a new lens :-)

If full manual doesn't bother you then the Samyang is a no brainer. Hard to think of any reason not to buy one for this type of photography.
