Hi guys,

I'm looking for a cheap flashgun to go in combination with my Nikon D40, it'll be my first foray into flashes and lighting since I got my camera almost a year ago and I'm interested in possibly purchasing a couple of cheapish flashes and some wireless triggers and having some fun.

Any recommendations on model, the SB-2x, SB-400 or possibly (stretching the budget slightly though) the SB-600 seem like a good match.

Newbie alert: Apart from price and a higher model number (and possibly power output?!?!) what do the higher spec flashes offer over the lower spec ones?

I recently bought some Cactus V4 triggers (£30) from GadgetInfinity and an SB25 (£72) to go along with my SB800.

In terms of off camera flash (ie shooting in manual) I haven't noticed any difference between the 2.

On camera the SB800 would work alot better, pluse you can use the commander mode with the SB800 (not sure if your camera has that though).

Hope thats some help.

I'd push it and buy the 600, then in a few months if you have the cash and want to you can buy an 800/900 giving you cls capability. It will also cls on a higherspec nikon body if you upgrade that.

Thanks guys,

I think I'll look into the SB600, bit of future proofing there, possibly. I assume the Cactus triggers will work with any flash?

Cheers, thanks for all the help!
