I have a Lowepro slingshot 100 at the moment which is fine but doesnt offer any room for anything other than my camera gear. So for my next holiday I'm really looking for a rucksack type bag to carry onto flights the Rover AW2 and the Rover AW2 Plus seem to fit the bill, so does anyone have any experience of these bags?

Oh, I have at the moment -

1 Canon 400D with grip
1 70-300IS
1 18-55 Kit lens
1 Nifty fifty

and various cards & spare batteries.

One other thing, where I'm heading has around 35cm of rainfall during September, so can anyone point me in the direction of a cover to protect my camera whilst I'm using it??

Have a good look at the slingshot 200
I had the 100 and my 350D with grip wouldn't fit.

My 20D with grip,3 lenses (60mm macro, 17-85 and 10-22), a penlite charger, 4 Cf's 580EX and 1 or 2 small items fit in easily with space to spare.

Have a look in the review section - I am sure you will find reviews on both the 200 and the 300.

300 is a bit bulky for my taste and as I have the computrekker AW+ I have both bases covered.

Unless you have some other stuff you didn't mention I think you would do well with a 200/300.

Also depends which countries you visit of course - you do not really want to advertise the value of your kit. A big bag will go a long way to do so!

Hope this helps

Cheers for the suggestion Anton, I had thought about a larger slingshot as I really like the design but I'm stuck as I need a bag for carry on luggage for the flight and also a bag to hold my camera gear, as airlines are getting quite tight about what they will allow I'm forced to take one bag. I'd thought about a rucksack type bag to hold all my camera gear and all the other dross I seem to cart around with me when I travel (iPod, PSP, travel docs, books etc etc).

I think I have a solution to the rain protection - an OP/Tech Rain Sleeve, looks like the business.

You do know that all AW Lowepro bags come with their own built in little raincoats don't you?

And I can tell you that they ARE effective!

I have a Rover AW2 and you certainly can pack a lot of gear into it. Normally carry SLR + 4-5 lens + Flash in bottom compartment.

Beware that Lowepro's website seems to advise that many of their bags meet cabin baggage allowances, but it you then check the dimensions against major European airlines, technically some of them are outside the allowance. Not a risk I wanted to take, didn't want a stroppy official insisting that my camera gear went in the hold.

Mr Perceptive

Mr Perspective makes a good point, don't expect to be allowed to take a bag big enough to carry all your gear plus extras on board as hand luggage.

Better to pare your kit down to the basics. Pack your kit lens, grip, batteries etc. in your suitcase you won't need them on the plane and your clothes should protect them.

Good advice guys, thanks! I'd been measuring the Rover AW against the limits my ariline imposes and it seems the bag is 8cm taller than allowed, which could be enough to cause problems with a grumpy official :( The AW plus is quite a bit more than this so I'm ruling that straight out. I'm just wondering if I could 'shrink' it by those 8cm maybe by not packing it full? Mr Perceptive, is it the AW or the AW plus you have?

Cheers for the link to the rain protectors Steep, just looking at that now :)

Will have a look at that one also cheers! Certainly isnt the cheapest though  (expensive hobby this one lol)
