I knew I should have stayed away but got one as an impulse buy on ebay. It was essentially mis-advertised as opened never used when in reality it is most certainly used. So I if need be I have an easy returns claim and a way out.
The really big problem is that on most occasions it doesn't connect properly to 5D3, as in it doesn't fire properly and doesn't appear in external speedlite menu either at all or with full options. In some cases it works and then it works really well, probably a little nicer results than Canon's 600EX-RT, Now I don't see any damage on the foot, but it doesn't mean it hasn't been [badly] replaced and thus causing this misery. The cam is 100% fine with 600EX, and the other 2 I sold a while ago, Godox XproC and X1T triggers. So that's 5 out 5.
Now 5Ds is a right pain, and is so with every single one of them. I have to rub the hotshoe with erasers before mounting flash and then it is fine otherwise nothing works in ETTL (but always fine in manual). What the hell is going on with that? Anyway mkIII is and always was fine and V1 is clearly not.
Are these like known for this and would I fix anything by adjusting or swapping the foot and take a bit of refund or would you opt to send it back for full refund (which I instinctively am leaning towards)?
My general thoughts about V1 are: really crappy foot mechanism (like way worse than Xpro screw or 600EX-RT flip lock), silly super sensitive wheel which causes flash to be re-set in manual mode at a slightest touch, and head is just a normal rectangle in round housing, rather than the nice head like H1R for ad200, the LED is stupid, yet somehow the output is still marginally better than 600EX.
