i'm doing a commercial time lapse and we need to buy about 6 go pro's for the space, if we got the original go pro model is there a quality difference in time lapse mode between the old and new model, and the various flavors of hero 3/hero 4

I have knowledge about the differences in video but no idea about time lapse- specifically interested in lens sharpness, dynamic range, full manual exposure

Gopro hero 4 have a "dedicated" time lapse mode! More settings are supposed to be able to be changed and a better quality is produced! Haven't got the new hero 4 yet but some quick research on YouTube about them in time lapse mode does look promising

hero 4 does have dedicated time lapse features and works very well both in day and night modes. GoPro Studio will also assemble the time lapse video ready for editing, and it does it very well. The Black edition will give you more options.
Here's a quick overview of the feature with a link or two to more information.

I thought all the go pro's had dedicated time-lapse modes?

6 hero 4's is getting extremely expensive though

thanks for the link, will read through it later

They have dedicated night time lapse and GoPro studio seems a lot better at assembling normal and night time lapse now.
I sold my silver GoPro 4 a while ago, busy saving up for a black edition.
