When i skinned my Canon A-1 i used Isopropyl Alcohol, if its a bit more stubborn you could try some acetone. IPA is a bit more gentle so will not damage the finish. Hardware wise, cotton buddies or a coffee stirring stick should do the job :)

You can get it from ebay, lots of online shops have it in small enough bottles so it wont be too expensive for one use

When I had some sticky glue residue left on a camera before, I used some aqueous cream moisturiser and it was pretty effective at removing it!

Most proper chemists (IE not a supermarket or Boots) will sell it in small quantities, they might have to order it in though.

Maplin also have it, but it's expensive.

I've always got it from this shop on eBay thermalkit shop on ebay

Only £5 for 500ml of IPA and a couple of cloths with free shipping. Always end up finding other uses for it, but i did get it originally for cleaning up old cameras and gunk and it works very well.

Thanks Rob and everyone else for the links :).i'll try my local chemist and if not one of the links supplied

thanks again

lens cleaner, label remover, Carb cleaner, electrical contact cleaner, or as I used Autoglym tar remover; all capable of doing the job.

my isopropyl arrived from ebay today, very quick delivery however i was so impatient i bought a 150ml bottle of 'classics' nail polish remover (main ingredient Isopropyl) from 'home bargains' store for .59pence it does the job superbly, removing all the gluey gunge with ease.so im recommending this to others.59p.....bargain :)
