Hi, im sure this has been done to death, but as im very new.......... What would give the best images, top quality glass on an average body or a top body with average glass ????? which setup would give the best results ????. Thanks Barry.

Top quality glass on an average body.
As and example, If you put a Canon 17-55 IS f/2.8 on a 40D body the image quality would be far better than a 18-55 IS on a 7D.

Glass on average body.

Glass will last you longer, new bodies come out every 1-2 years etc...good glass will last you a long time

Top quality glass on an average body.

Top end bodies will not give you better quality, they will give you better build, speed, ergonomics, etc.

Of course Full frame should give you better quality than crop but that's a different story.

:agree: with the rest... I have read the same in forums, magazines & reviews etc etc- that the investment is in the lenses.....

Lenses over camera.

Why do people keep saying "glass"??

Here we go again...

Are you using a Crop Body or are you referring to a Crop Body?. If yes then stick any lens in f8 and i doubt you will notice the difference.

If on the other hand you are talking about FF then glass will play a far bigger part as you will need good corner sharpness etc,

You mention "Top Quality Glass" actually everyone that asks this question never gives us a few lenses to compare..

So lets compare the Tamron 17-50mm v Canon 17-40mm f4 L.
There really is very little in it.

Lets compare the same Tamron 17-50mm v Any Lens over £4k in price...The tamron does not even come close..

What do you have?. What are you planning on buying? What are you comapring?

Thanks for the speedy replys :) :) Post was a bit vague, because im not sure what i want :thinking: at present i have a Canon 400d with kit lens, a 50mm 1.8 lens and a Sigma 70-300mm APO lens. I have about 1k to spend, im either looking at a 7D body or keeping the 400D and investing in better optics, thanks. Barry

So my first post answers your question then.
Although you could consider a used 40D and perhaps a lens upgrade once you've sold your 400D.

400D and good glass wins everytime.
OK the 400D is a couple of years old now, but it ain't no slouch when it comes to producing the goods.
I had a 400D and bought a bigma 120-400mm, and was amazed at what a glass upgrade can produce.

Another vote for spending money on lenses. I am on my 3rd digital body, and before that I had 4 analogue bodies. I am still using some of the same lenses I owned in 1994 and used on a EOS 5, and they still produce excellent results. Furthermore, if I needed to sell them, I'd still get quite a lot of money for them. My oldest lens dates from 1992 I think, and it's a belter.

Yeah, bugs me too!

A agree with most of what's been said. I have a 40D which isn't a 'pro' body, but I've invested in good lenses and you can see the difference. And as has been mentioned, lenses will outlast your body (if you look after them).

Just remember that if you invest in EF-S lenses (or the Nikon equiv), you won't be able to use them on a full frame body if you decide to get one at some point.

In general glass... BUT...

You need to think about the way the camera will be used. For example, if you need high iso capability I would rather have say a D700 with average glass than my D300 and top glass.

400D is my backup camera. Works great with my L lenses (I just forget where the settings are).

what lens are you wanting to replace?

I'd spend the cash on a lens replacing the kit lens for the 17-55 IS, sell 400D and buy a 40D from the canon outlet

I have a 450d and some good prime lens. I really like the look of the 5dmkii but at a grand and a half it's more than the cost of a lot of really good lens, so I end up getting glass first. I'd like full frame at some point. The 70d isn't full frame so wouldn't suit my needs. I assume you realise that it is a crop sensor.

If you already had a good compliment of lens then body might be the next purchase. With what you've got I'd say a lens is the next thing to get. You are ofcourse going to get more lens AND a better body eventually :-)

Another thing to consider is that with 18 megapixels crammed onto the crop sensor of the 7D you really should be using the best glass to get the most out of it, certainly not the kit lens. That'd be like buying the best quality audio system and linking it up with cheap flimsy cables

'Glass', 'invest' and 'lens' all bother me, its lens, buy and lens!!!!! :gag::gag:

As for the question its definately lenses, although the most important thing is the fleshy bit hanging off the other end.

No, it's "definitely" lenses ;-)

'Invest' is just the word you use when buying lenses to reassure yourself that you haven't just 'spent' enough money to buy a second hand car! :)

The problem is that you have just spent that much! Although the depreciation rates may be better on the lens!

You may think you are 'investing' in the ability to take better photos to give you more pleasure or further your business.

I think glass rather than lens in the same way as I think of body rather than camera.

Either way, invest in glass :D

glass does it every time...the body supplies the shutter only..and the sensor
but a well sensed wobbly image is not what we are about
