I was thoroughly confused looking at the Gitzo site, phoned Gitzo UK and got a brief explanation of the series and numbers:

  • Traveler- lightweight, compact
  • Explorer - fro exploring 'creative possibilities', off center column, no fixed angles for legs
  • Leveller - for architecture/ landscape. Levelling that will keep camera flat whilst panning.
  • Systematic - no centre column, for heavy equipment
  • Mountaineer - basic tripod

Explanation for numbers EG GT1542T
  • G - Gitzo
  • T - tripod, H for head, M for monopod
  • 1 - seres number, from 00 to 5, in increasing size / strength
  • 5 - material, 5 for carbon, 7 mag alloy
  • 4 - leg sections, or other pertinent info, eg 8 for centre ballhead, 5 for off centre
  • 2 - revision number
  • T - series, eg t for traveller, LVL for levelling, nothing for mountaineer, EX for explorer

those number are really confuse when choosing a Gitzo

my mountaineer end with L with longer length
