After some advice, yesterday I took my Gitzo Mountaineer 3542tripod centre column apart to do some low level work. I’ve taken it apart before and, but not for a while, but I’m sure I just screwed it back together. Now it won’t screw together, I checked where I used it and I can’t find anything that’s fallen out of the centre column. Any ideas what’s happened or I’m doing wrong? I realise it’s all a bit vague...

That’s very helpful Rich. If I’m reading it right I’ve lost part D0702.01, although it was indoors and I’ve chucked where I took the column apart and there’s nothing on the floor and the column was definitely joined as I had to unscrew the sections! How strange

Actually looking again I’m not convinced. The top of the column appears to not be engaging into the top. There’s nothing inside the lower column for the screw base to engage. I feel somethings missing, but as I say checking the floor of the building which hasn’t had anyone in since yesterday there’s nothing...

@GordonM Just realised I had the series 1 version of this tripod, in fact sold it on here.
You need to lock the top part on the column, its the grey metal ring, D104208 in the diagram.
It has markings on it, says something like low level, turn it about half a turn or so to lock it on the centre column.
Then the upper part D104215 is secured with part D0702.01

Not sure if you have the instruction manual. It has two sections on setting it up for ground level shooting and returning it to the longer centre column. Hopefully that can help you.

Agree that the missing part 's only function is to attach the head to the column - assuming the missing part is correctly identified?
