I’m thinking of a Gitzo mini traveller tripod or similar tripod as a very lightweight tripod option to get low level ground photos with the Nikon 400mm f4.5 and Z8. I will mainly be hand holding but want some support for low level ground photos. A mini tripod looks ideal with small size and low weight meaning I will carry it on the chance of using it.

The max weight on the gitzo is 3kg so higher than the weight of the Nikon combo (2.3kg). You can also swap over the head to the gitzo 82TQD which I already have.

Anyone have one of these mini tripods and use it in a similar way?

Leofoto sell a strong mini.
Look on their site.

I was looking at their small mini tripods at the photography show in March. Their ranger mini tripod looked pretty good. Maybe a bit too big for what I’m thinking. Their other mini tripod is only rated to 2kg.

Interestingly I’ve just gound out the gitzo mini legs are rated to 25kg. It’s the head that takes it down to 3kg. Perhaps the 82-TQD head I have will up rate it above 3kg.

Ive been using this...https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07KD33JLB/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Is good for in the forest mushroom shots (not that I take many) although as a landscape tripod it's not very handy as need a little more hight to get above grass etc. There is the centre column that can be added for more height, but I suspect stability is lost with the extra height.
Thanks for that suggestion. I think that's similar to what I looked at at the NEC earlier this year. Do you need to use the centre column? I want to get flat to the floor. That s a great price at £60.72 with the extra 20% off.

That said I found the Nikon Z8 amazing this morning holding the camera with one hand off the ground and using the rear screen angled upwards. That could be a game changer in that I may not really need any support to get low like I previously thought.

That is a MUCH better tripod for the intended use, and also much more versatile.

I'd sympathise, but at the moment I'm considering adding a medium size tripod to my setup up now. The manfrotto 055 was good when I had DSLR, feels overkill for m43.

Looking at the sirui AM254 for myself

I’ve had a look through the range. Im wondering if the levelling base version would be better for me.
Could be... the fact that the leveling ball friction is on the side means it's still usable when set flat. Also, 15˚ of tilt in every direction is enough to replace a ballhead in a lot of situations (just add a clamp)... it's also very low if you don't add a head.

However, if you do add a ballhead then it's not of a lot of benefit and adds weight and height. If you use it with a gimbal head or pan-tilt, then the benefit is greater. Some leveling bases are quite smooth at partial friction, others not so much... I have no experience with this one in particular.
