Before I get the hacksaw out, I'm after a short centre column. I've looked on gitzospares and it doesn't list one for mine. So, are series 2 centre columns interchangeable between the various models?

Thanks

Can't help you with that model, but I did introduce my Manfrotto 055D to Mr Hacksaw, as getting a bit lower down was more important to me than getting a bit higher up.
Plus, if you need to extend the center pole to any great extent then you bought the wrong tripod (In my opinion.)
Extending the pole really destabilizes them. (In my opinion :) )

I don't need to go up any, I've got an 4 leg section "L" version so it's high enough anyway. I'd rather just not cut it up if I don't need to... Unless the columns are crazy expensive too:)

Which gitzo tripod model do you have? I went the hacksaw route with a manfrotto tripod years ago but I did buy a replacement centre column so I didn’t cut the carbon fibre one.

Not patronising at all. I just thought it a bit cheeky when the real plan was one on eBay!

Well it's available on Gitzo Spares for £30.50 + VAT.

I don't think your tripod has the "low level" feature of some models but unscrew the bottom of your centre column check the thread on the top of the base plate - I suspect it is 3/8 inch you can check it as there are lots of 3/8 threads on the tripod (the removable feet for example). If so then something like this should do the job; https://www.westfieldfasteners.co.uk/UNC-Nuts/Long-Nut-Hex-Connector-UNCoarse-3-8-A4-Stainless.html

This would allow you to connect your top plate directly to the column base without the centre column thus duplicating the Gitzo "low level" feature without sawing your tripod. Check what length you need before buying - remember there is some "Wiggle Room" as the locking ring for the centre column can be used for tightening.

Yes, the long nut is a great idea.
I've had a quick look and the the thread is indeed suitable. The base plate sits nicely and self centralises. The top plate however, doesn't naturally sit in place and there would be scope for sideways movement. I'm sure I can come up with some sort of bush that would solve that though.

I have a Gitzo GT2531 that has the "Low Level" feature and many of the components look similar, if not identical. Just thought it was worth investigating?

Looking at the gitzo spares diagram @johnf3f idea may work. A small section of rubber gasket either end may help protect the tripod body and give a tighter fit.

On my GT2531 there is no protection needed - but it was designed that way! On the OP's tripod a bit of rubber sheeting may well be a good idea.

I've had a better look tonight and it's definitely doable. I'll report back

Thanks all

It seems we are reinventing the wheel a tad, and Gitzo solved it themselves with this kit.... now discontinued and I cant see it in stock anywhere...... back to the workbench!

Sounds like the coupler idea will be perfect..... and a lot cheaper than a gitzo supplied option (as much as I like gitzo quality and build the cost of their spares is a bit high).

That is what I was trying to duplicate - but at non Gitzo prices.

Well, after the great ideas, I was going to get the required bits this weekend and head to the workbench.... However, I saw there was a brand new series 2, short carbon column on eBay.... So I popped a starting price bid in, never thinking I'd actually get it.... No one else bid, so for £20 it's mine

Nice one!

That is exactly how I got my 800 F5.6 L IS - though not for 20 quid!
