it should work ive used it on windows 7 64 bit and it works perfect, it wont be gimp that has the problems it would more likely be vista because vista does have a lot of bugs when it comes to software.
GIMP no probs with Vista at all, I;ve been using it for a while now although installing PS CS4 as we speak and have just d/l'ed the trial of plug in suite to give that a go as well
If still in any doubt, you could try the portable version of gimp. Meant for USB sticks, but can still install it as a standalone app without it installing and dropping stuff into programs and windows folders.
After a quick play with PS CS4 extended I find GIMP runs a lot quicker than PS although may need a reboot after the install!
PS is easier to use though!
Am running a pretty decent Vaio so will also have to take into consideration am running a laptop with only 2Gb RAM, not sure but would guess as it has Bluray the graphics cars would be reasonably good but obviously no way near as good as a decent desktop setup.
