Gimp of the video world?

Is there a program like Gimp out there for video editing?
I don't mean the interface etc, I just mean a good free video editing program.

I currently use Media Impression that came free with a Kodak pocket camera. I still use the same basic camera but want to be able to do more than the low level editing the software provides.

Are there any out there people can suggest I try?

Looks like you need to pay for HD support but it's only £4.99.
If its better than what I have would be worth it.

Lightworks is probably the closest to a "Gimp for video". It's open source and is in near permanent beta stage, but it works:

Lightworks looks interesting, I'll test it over the weekend

Lightworks is good but takes a bit of getting used to. Sony Vegas does have a fully functional 30day trial version and is not very expensive to buy.
