Edit My Images
No
Hello, I have been usuing GIMP for a while now, but I don't seem to be able to open NEF files with it... I have the 2.6 version... do I need to download something extra? Is so where from? I have looked on their website for plugins but I can't find any to download :(

Thanks in advance :)

Just found that and downloaded it :)

Are there lots of add ons?

Hmmmm it my just be me, but when I open my image in GIMP using that software it looks very dark??

Are there lots of add ons?

For GIMP? Yep, quite a few :)
The separate gimp-plugins package, FX-Foundry, G'Mic and resynthesize cover most bases for me.
I'm on Linux but pretty sure those are available for the Windoze version, too!

I will take a peek.... but as I said above that software I have downloaded make the image seem very dark... loads more that Irfanview *confused*

Hmmmmm strange... me not like :(

I read it may have summet to do with Active D (whatever that is).

Very interesting...

An image taken with D-lighting off comes out darker in Gimp than CNX2.

An image taken with D-lighting set to "low" comes out ever so slightly lighter than in CNX2. Close though.

I don't think I've taken any images with D-lighting set to any other values. Anyone?

Ah OK, so Gimp doesn't understand about D-lighting. That's a shame.

Presumably you're loading your image into Gimp in order to manipulate it, so does it matter that it's a bit darker initially? Just another adjustment to make!

If you save in the camera as jpg you would preserve the D-lighting effects, but obviously lose out on the raw advantages.

Well yes, as the amount you have to alter the image to make it look lighter and better, starts to make it look strange

Glad its not just me it happens to and it is a shame as its perfect in Irfranview :)

I asked the question a while back as I was confused about what was happening - as mentioned it's down to the active D lighting. If you switch this off it is still darker but less so. So there is aobviously a preset problem/glitch in UFRaw. If you want to use active D lighting (which effectively increases the dynamic range in an image) then I'd suggest using NX if you have it. There are issues with noise and it is also making some other decisions for you so I ended up turning it off and managing the raw files as it was intended. If you do a search on here then you might find a better explanation as it was provided to me.
