Following on from the thread Giggles several people commented on the processing.
I thought that I would show you step-by step what I did. Not in a screen-shot way, cos my comp hates screen shots - so here we have images step by step and what I did to get from shot 1 to 2 etc....
Explanations are underneath the photographs
1. Unprocessed
This is the origional file, in all its glory. Shot in a bedroom with the curtains closed with the Nikon 18-70 and the D200 as a RAW file.
No processing is done on this at all.
Bouncing the flash from an SB 800 however the battery power was dying and this is underexposed.
2. Raw Edit
I opened the Image in Camera Raw via Bridge, and made it actually two stops lighter. I slightly adjusted the fill light, the blacks and the recovery to give this final image - and the next step in the process.
3. Gradient Overlay
I duplicated the background Layer and then in the adjustments in CS3 I chose "Gradient Map" this then converts it into a monochrome image
You can then change the blending mode of the layer, set this to "Overlay" and this is what it produces.
This is the part of the processing where most of the detail is lost in the hat.
I do this as a seperate background layer, as if I find that it is too much, you can reduce the opacity of the top image, and it'll just make subtle changes.
You will also notice that the "blotches" on the wall have been cloned out, as has the tattoo on the shoulder closest to us. That was more because my eye was being drawn to it, rather than the whole image.
4. A Touch of Contrast
....and bringing back detail.
In this image, I left the Gradient Overlay version as a seperate layer [but merged] and selected the hat only, and rubbed out the hat on the Gradient Overlay version. This then gives me a bit more detail with the hat. in the image.
I also boosted contrast with the "contrast slider" by approximately 25%
5. BW Preset
The black and white is done in one of the Presets, either in channel mixer, or black and white.
This one was done in Chanel mixer and I think [I cannot honestly fully remember] this is the preset for "BW with Orange Filter"
6. A Touch of Colour
Rather than have a plain BW image I decided to add a touch of colour.
This was done using the "Colour Balance" Slider, and just dialied in approximately 10 of red.
7. Finishing Touches
Finishing touches were added to the image, a little bit more boost in contrast.
Sharpening at quite a high percentage.
A 10% copy layer, with surface blur to "smooth" the skin, the "spots" cloned out.
and a Gausian Blur layer also added.
This is the finished article
Hope you found it helpful - any questions then please ask.
I think the image on giggles, wasnt processed as "white" as this one, but you can always have fun with the sliders!
