Hi,
I am interested in having a go at creating a gigapixel panorama.
I have the camera and the lens needed but not the machine what turns the camera.
Has anybody here done a gigapixel photograph???
Can it be done manually on a tripod. I actually made a panorama head for the my tripod something like -

thanks

The thing you'll have most trouble with is actually creating the image with your computer.

I have a computer that can run Crysis (google it if you don't know what it is) with most of its settings set to the highest.

The other day I made a panorama with 14 photographs and it took absolutely ages for my computer to create it. Talking about 5 minutes (absolutely ages when you're used to super quick). Most gigapixel panoramas have, god, hundreds, thousands of photographs. It would take a LOT of processing power.

You could theoretically take the images manually, but I would not want to. You'd have to remember what you'd taken photographs of and overlap a lot more than you would if you had a 'pan-bot' taking it, making = more images = more processing power required.

If the object s your including are all shot with somethinng near 50mm at 50 feet or more... You probably dont need that rig... I have handheld panoramas that go 360 degrees. As for Software the canon disk has something called "photostitch" which honestly made a better job of joining them and faster than photoshop... It takes a long time because you have automated one of the most resource hungry things you can do on a PC.... join / overlap/blend/stretch/distort 14 images.... That would take me a LOOOONNNG time... But who cares... It will still do it...
