My daughters band have a gig on Wednesday and this is my first opportunity to get a few snaps. I'm only a beginner and have not had too much success taking photos using the on board flash. I think we are going to be on a balcony over looking the stage. I have a canon 450 with 18-55 is and 75-300 lenses.

Amy hints or tips appreciated.

see what kind of lighting you're gonna be up against...that's gonna be your biggest problem

Don't bother taking the 75-300. Try not to use your flash and bump up your ISO to 1600.

Can you beg/steal/borrow a 50mm f/1.8 before then?

I don't think I can. Would I not be too far away up on the balcony for a 50mm. I don't think the angle I will be at will be very good for photos anyway.

What's wrong with taking the longer lens?

I think it's more to do with the aperture size of the lens rather than the length of zoom.
I'm presuming it's a large venue?
What kind of gig is it (classical, rock, etc)

Afgha - Last Saturday two of us gave a workshop on Concert and Festival Photography. If you PM me your email address I'll send you the handout sheet. It's five pages and covers technique, composition, kit, getting access, etc. It's all the details we didn't want to have to go into verbally during the workshop and meant nobody had to take notes.

We get a mention about 3/4 of the way down this list of workshops...

That was a mentally busy festival!

I would say it's a medium sized venue. An old ball room size. I think it holds around 1000 people. it's an rock(indie) band. They are in an inter-school battle of the bands type thing, so I think I'll only have access from my seat rather than being able to take photos from different positions.

Afgha - I think your big challenge is going to be getting your shots without spoiling the concert for the people sitting behind you. You wouldn't get away with it at a 'normal' ticketed event with paying punters; venue managers would be tapping you on the shoulder pretty fast; but it sounds like this may be a less formal venue and that might work for you...
Talk to the organisers, tell them your relationship to the band and that you want to photograph them; then work with them to find somewhere to photograph from that is acceptable to everyone. Given you know the band then you may even find you get offered better access! Don't ask, won't get....
Do it as soon as possible! You need the OK from the organisers up-front otherwise it won't happen; the actual details can be sorted out talking to the stage crew at the concert.

Yep. You will probably find that at the apertures of the 75-300 your shutter speed is going to be in the region of 0.5s so you'll have no hope of getting a decent shot due to camera-shake and movement of the artists.

Speaking to the organisers is good advice. There's every chance they'll allow you to get up and shoot if you explain you're a parent and don't get in the way of the rest of the audience.
