What lens (canon fit) would be great to have to take shots at gigs - initially they will be pub/club type gigs rather stadium/large venue type gigs so getting reasonably close the action shouldn't be a problem?

I have a 24-105 f/4L already but am thinking this may not be fast enough.

Thanks for your help and pointers one and all

Cheers Keith - I was was thinking about the 50mm f/1.4 or the 85mm f/1.8 but you reckon a zoom at 2.8 would be better/ more versatile?

I'm debating with myself about whether to get a sigma 24-70/2.8, tamron 17-50/2.8 or canon 85/1.8. One of the zooms will likely win though, the versatility is more useful to me

Hi my experience is that f4 certainly will not be fast enough unless you are willing to push the 1D2 to its highest iso settings.

Depends also to some extent whether your bands are the standing around or jumping around types (?) but I would certainly want f2.8 as a minimum.

Anyway, do not think you would go too far wrong with a 50f1.4 (Siggy or Canon) and the Tammy 28-70f2.8 impressed me when I had it although I did not use it THAT much for gigs as I tend to be side of stage and use the 135f2 or 70-200f2.8ISII. I now have the 24LII for front of stage action. Have not had the chance to use it for this purpose yet though.

Best of luck in your selection.

Ive used a 85mm f/1.8 at larger venues from the side or behind the stage, but for most, a 24-70 is the way to go. Gives you so much more room for manourve, if you want a whole band shot, or zoom in to pick out a single person.

That said, most of my favourite photos were taken with the 85mm

Rapidly coming to the conclusion that both a 24-70 f/2.8 AND an 85mm f/1.8 are needed/wanted :naughty:

24-70 f2.8 is my most used live music lens. Couple that with a 70-200 f2.8 and you will have most things covered.

Primes are good and can come in very handy but are much harder to work with due to the obvious issues of not being able to zoom.

:agree:

Both of these and your 5dmkII have been my long term plan for a while.

Very happy with the 50d at the moment and i still have alot to learn with it , i will add both the above lenses over the coming 12-18 months before i go FF
