Hi everyone,

Some and any tips/advice would be much appreciated here. I've got my first scheduled gig shoot tomorrow and advice particularly on settings, do's/dont's, and tips/tricks would be gratefully received. Especially if someone uses/has used the same model.

Many thanks

Try typing "concert photography" in the search box and hitting Enter, Interrupted.

DB's right, there's a plethora of information and tid-bits knocking about on here for gig stuff.

But just quickly..

Do:

-Speak to the band before they go on if possible. Ie it's not some huge star you're shooting. Although its not out of the question even if it were.

-Shoot wide open, for s/s and to lose the usually messy backgrounds. Use your judgement of course, but as a general rule 2.8 is about right for most gigs I've been to.

-Get in as close as you dare.

-Experiment.

Don't:

-Get in the way of the crowd.

-Get in the way of the band.

-Flash if you're not allowed to.

-Flash everything even if you are allowed to.

-Forget to check your ISO.

-Fall off the stage like I did at my last gig.

I'd check with the band and the organisers about the "three song" rule, whereby photographers are allowed to snap as much as they want for the first 3 songs to get the shots they need then they can take no more and are removed from the press area.

Depending on the size of the gig it may not be relevant but just to avoid embarassment if security do come over to chuck you out :p

Hi,

Mike - yes it's a 3 no-flash but that's no prob as pretty expected, cheers for the reply

Jay - big band, small venue, so just want to make the most of it with this cam in closer quarters. Is no prob with etiquette, done before in without pressure and with a less reliable camera, lol.
Thank you for the tips, much appreciated.

Thanks everyone, very grateful for time given to answer and off to do the search now :)

I've had a look but couldn't actually find much more than mentioned here. Didn't mention the camera has IS and Live View which is a bonus but going down to specific settings aside from the basics, this is where i'm clueless (and clearly need to be taking some lessons, which will be doing just waiting for the guy to come through).
Should stat general settings aside from ISO/Shutter/Exposure/Spot be fine?

Gracias x
