Hello All,

The lens listed above is my general purpose lens. I really like the wide angle aspect but I have to admit, I've found the 300mm end awfully handy at times. This lens however, like similar big zoom lens, has a sharpness issue. I know full well that zoom lens don't really compare to primes but are their any tips, tricks or techniques I can use so my images generally come out sharper.

During a recent beach trip, I took my camera out and started shooting while others (Family) were playing a game of footie on the sand. I reviewed some shots when their was downtime but I suppose you can only make out so much on a small LCD screen in the sun. After getting home and reviewing the images on my laptop, attempting to be as objective as I could, I was able to draw out both positives and negatives. Positives being that I'm happy I used burst mode effectively and captured some good shots of the match. I don't fancy myself being proficient in any real manner but I like to think I genuinely did well and am content with myself as something like this would have been a no no a year ago.

Some negatives being that I lost focus at times with some images, the sea was in more focus than the kids. Overall, the images weren't exactly the sharpest. I attribute this to the lens. I like to think I was shooting at a relatively fast shutter speed (I found shooting at 1/800 was sufficiently fast enough) although I had to ramp up the ISO to 800 and exposure compensation to +3. These settings were done to offset the fact that I ramped my aperture down to F8-11 so I could try to judge which was a sharper aperture. Many of my images have come out grainier.

It was a good exercise because as of late, I haven't been out and about with my camera so I was almost learning again and overall I'm content although I wish my lens was capable of more. I'm merely an enthusiast and I just wanted a mult - purpose lens. I had my kit lens on for a long time and I quite liked it but I often wished it had more reach so this fulfills that criteria but general quality leaves a lot to be desired.

First of all, good on you for pushing the boundary of what you were comfortable with. Life begins at the edge of your comfort zone :D

If you wanted to, perhaps upload one or two for us to have a look at. That way we might be able to see if it’s definitely lens or whether there’s some tips on technique that might help you out. If you include the EXIF info we can double check the settings too to be sure :)

I've got a good handful of primes and good wide aperture short range zooms, but more than half of my photographs, and some of my best photographs, were taken with the good old general purpose wide range zoom I put on the camera when I go out with nothing particular in mind, just in case a shot turns up. It used to be an 18-250mm, and now is Tamron's 16-300mm. If you know their limits, and how to coax the best from them, these "inferior" lenses can take some pretty good photographs.
