Getting the Dave Hill look... - Getting the Dave Hill look...

If you've seen the style of photographers like Dave Hill (and no, he's not the guitarist from Slade!!) who favour the high detail, contrasty, desaturated look but don't know where to start then this may help.

I've used Lightroom 2 for this but I suppose any software that has the ability to play with saturation, curves/levels and to create a vignette is usable.

First up is the start image; this is Duncan and he's one of the guys who I shoot fishing...

Good stuff dude, may have to give that a try over the winter.

That's a great little tutorial, mate, thank you.

Here's one I did earlier.

Two softboxes at 1/16th power on the background, one key light at 1/32th on the face.

Same processing, just increased the black clipping to maximum to give it that dirty, Dragan effect. Strong lighting is deffo the key to making this work methinks.

If you have Photoshop or GIMP etc which allows for layer blends you can and a 50% grey layer blended to soft light, then paint on it with black or white to exaggerate the contrast even more.

You can keep on layering this to get very strong results if you want.

The full versions of photoshop have a vignette ajustment built in, it's under filter/distort/lens correction.
It might be in elements too but I never use it so haven't a clue.

His work is very, very stylised and obviously to a big, big budget with lots of CGI, but you get my drift hopefully :)
