Wow this thing is impressive. Even with just the kit lens it takes some lovely images.

We all know super zooms are a compromise over primes but I still think the lens will serve him well.
It also has a excellent close up facility that I used over my 105mm nikon when I went to the British wildlife centre shooting harvest mice and other small creatures.
He also stated he will add A 50mm at a later date and may even move to faster aperture zooms in the future.
At the end of the day he has a budget and it wouldn't be wise to over stretch your finances.
I'm sure if we all had unlimited finances we would all buy the very best camera lens and accessories.
But alas I don't know that many people with unlimited resources.
And there is always gonna be the ?
Will having all the best gear but no idea make me a better tog

While you make a fair point, I found the kit lens to be so much better that, generally, I'd advise on using that & then adding more decent lenses as budget allows. In any case the OP has done the right thing & bought what he really wanted, solving that issue now.

Hey now you got a body you get to be all angsty about lenses, types of lenses, adapter choice, even get all Minolta on the thing!
My advice : get a used pancake for the pocket and a big old cheap Minolta tele with adapter.

Got my eye on the 50mm f1.8 already. But the first lens I will be purchasing will be the the Sony 18-105mm F4 G oss. That will then be used as my main walk about lens.

But for now, I'm very happy with the two kit lenses.

My advice is don't buy a thing until you find your missing something. Buy one thing, learn how to use it, find its limitations and only then buy. Otherwise you'll end up with GAS like the rest of us

I did not read all the other post so sorry if it has been said. The problem is that you are trying to make to many decisions at once. You will never figure it out that way. Figure out what what brand you want to buy into first. Then start looking at their cameras.
