Getting shapes instead of pictures (hard to explain...)

I know exactly what I'm trying to do but I'm having a really hard time putting it into words...

Take a picture like this:

And make it like this:

I'm glad I found that second picture because it's almost exactly what I'm looking to achieve. I'm planning to get the first few steps of evolution and then the last ones are going to be a skier, a snowboarder and then a drinker - it's for a ski trip jumper I'm designing.

How can I make the coloured shapes from normal pictures?

i dont how if there is an easier technique but this is how i would do it either get the 3 pictures you require and cut them out with pen tool and when they have the marching ants they can be coloured in using a different layer or use freehand/illustrator or take the easier way out and google

skier silhouette ,snowboarder silhouette and drinker all brings up images

You need an app to convert bitmaps to vectors. Corel Draw used to be able to do this, not sure if the current incarnation wil do it. Just Googled Bitmap to Vector and there are loads of links to techniques. Also seems to be a free option as well

I did his very quickly by

Select Colour (use background colour)
Invert Selection
Solid colour layer
Then use Dodge & Burn on the mask to tidy it up.
