Hey all,

Im just after a bit of advice with regards to getting into motorsport photography.

Im much of a novice to photography at the moment, but would like to get myself into taking motorsport photography. I've been to Donington once for a track day, where I managed to get some alright panning.. but wanted to know any tips and tricks you may have?

Also, how do you guys go about finding dates of when track-days and events are happening?

What tracks do you recommend for me to try out? I've been told Donington is a tough one to find the right place, whilst Mallory has lots of access for taking pictures.

Im using a Sony Alpha 200 with Tamron 70-300mm 1:4/5.6.. Is there anything else you'd recommend I got?

I've attached a picture from Donington of my first attempt!

One website you can look at for dates is www.motorsportvision.co.uk you could shearch for track days or race tracks on the web. I have been to Brands Hatch twice and it is good for taking photos.

Well forget Donington for a while - the track is dug up, the contractors have gone bust, BSB pulled there date from next years calendar already! Lets hope MSV buy it and get it back on track eh?.................anyway

So, where about in the country are you? I made the trip to Oulton one this year and it was great! There is also a good guide from Matt Sayle on here.
Silverstone aint bad - again current track alterations pending - theres a few corners avaliable depending on which circuit they're using.
Never been to Brands with camera - but gets thumbs up on here.
I've never been to Mallory either - but thats something that will change 2010!

You'll find good advice on here, and good info on tracks through the various photos posted. Have a search around.

Unless Tom's moved, he's in Derbyshire!

A lot depends how far you're willing to travel and what sort of motorsport you fancy having a go at.

I'm from Derby, so Donington, Silverstone and Mallory Park are the most convenient ones!

Thanks for above advice too :)

From March or April there will be things going on at most circuits. Test days and track days during the week - track days are mostly for the general public to try their cars out on a circuit, a test day is for race drivers to do the same and test new cars and setups.

Generally free to attend.

Races are mostly at weekends (except bank holidays in which case a Monday event is not uncommon). You have to pay to get in, but for a club meeting its usually about £ 12 for the day.

During the winter, there is little racing, but there are still testing and track day opportunities, and there is more rallying instead.

If you fancy a trip out, go to Mallory Park on Boxing Day for their Plum Pudding meeting.
