I'm interested in all aspects of digital film-making - script, storyboard, shooting, lighting, sound, directing and editing. However I don't know how to get into it except via a course at college or even university. I can't give up work so it would have to be part-time. Does anyone know of a good route into it? My local college had an ideal course on its web site but when I rang up to enrol they said they weren't running it as there were too few people (think I was the only one!). My end goal is to shoot an adaptation of my favourite book, the script is a long-term project of mine.

That's a bit of a tricky one, as part-time courses like that likely won't offer you the level of knowledge and immersion that makes film school beneficial, as well as losing a lot of the networking aspect. What I would probably recommend doing is to read. A lot. There's an unbelievable amount of detail that goes into every single role on a film set (an entire careers worth!) but to have a general knowledgeable of them all is vital. FilmRiot (YouTube channel) is a fantastic resource, as is DSLRguide. Get a copy of the Set Lighting Technician's Handbook. The most important thing however is to just start making films. It doesn't matter what, and they certainly don't have to be any good, but absolutely the most important thing is to keep making them. Get started!

If you can't go via the college route then get together with some like minded people to make your own movies. There are loads of folk out there there are trying to fund and film their own productions, all with different levels of experience and aims but fundamentally they all just want to make movies.

I'm pretty sure Newcastle has an active filmmaking subculture, at least it did 25 years ago when I was looking at studying up there.

It might be worth checking out this group it could be right up your street.
