Getting creative with a point and shoot

I have loved photography for many years, but it was only last year that I managed to be able to afford to replace my Canon film camera, an EOS100, with a digital SLR. That is unless you count the point and shoot Panasonic Lumix TZ8 that I bought a couple of years ago, so I had to content myself with messing around with my TZ8 and learning Elements 9 / Lightroom. As the TZ8 shoots only JPEGS I've never expected wondrous results, but saying that I'm pleased with what can be achieved with good composition and a basic understanding of photography and how to apply it to a camera with a tiny sensor.

I've created a gallery here, which I hope you will enjoy, to demonstrate how much fun can be had with a simple camera and a bit of software. I've used Lightroom 4 together with downloaded presets and Elements 9.

Thanks

Carl

You have some lovely images here Carl .. nice work. I'm another who is a real fan of my compact. Although I'm lucky to have decent DSLRs and lenses to play with, I'm often to be found with my trusty and much loved Canon S100 and have taken many a decent shot with it. As it's so small, it really is just easier to carry around a lot of the time. Keep up the good work, and don't forsake the compact now you have a "big" camera to use ….

I use a 7D and some reasonably nice glass, but it's not always worth carrying it around.

I went to Barcelona 6 months ago and only took a £50 Canon compact and came back with some shots I was really happy with:

Ok, the IQ could be better, but for £50 you can't complain!

Like the scooter shot. Out of interest did you take them in b+w or change them afterwards. I use a TZ40 which allows you to take b+w.?

Hi Carl, thats a very nice gallery. More proof that a good eye is more important than what gear you use. I use a compact or a phone more than my dslr. Non photographers don't care what camera you use if the results are good.
