Its been awhile since iv picked up my camera but going to shoot at local boxing this weekend and not sure whether I should stick with my Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 or try using 50mm f/1.7 this time round?

Body: Sony A700
Lenses: See sig.

I actually got some good results last time round with the Sigma but this time its a different venue and I havent got a clue what the lighting is like so its really a guessing game! Going to get there early and shoot some test shots and get a good position.

Also dont want to make the same mistake last time and take my Slingshot 200AW bag as it was so busy I was just getting bumped left right and centre!

Hi Bal,

I'm shooting boxing tonight and I'll be using the 50mm..Im shooting on a crop body(1.3) so effectively this is a great focal length if you can get right up to the ropes. Some venues and boxing bodies allow you to shoot from a neutral corner but dont want you walking round during each round....No flash except inbetween rounds..so corner shots wish flash are normally ok.

The your 24-70 @2.8 may be fine depending on the lighting but you may have to wind the ISO up.

Good luck....Tug

Have a look at some my older boxing threads... Might be of some interest to you. I usually get full access to ring so 50mm might be a good choice this time round... I got some good results at f/2.8 1/125 and iso 800 but it all depends on the day

When I shoot this stuff I use 24-70 on my Mk3 at f2.8. Sometimes at full ISO (6400). The 24-70 is needed as action moves around the ring which means you can follow easier than with a prime. But this is just my oppinion :)

I dont think I have ever used ISO 6400 on my A700. If the lighting is good then I shouldnt have too much to worry about!

Mixed results! The light was very bright and harsh which gave me all sorts of problems... Tried all sorts to get the right settings but then had to make the decision to use my flash which helped!

Dont know what lighting was being used but it was a very white crisp light and blazing with heat!

Oh well... Next time I might opt for balcony position instead of ring side.

What settings did you eventually use ?

I stuck with shutter mode, 1/200, f/2.8, iso 800 but I did try to adjust whilst shooting but because every round is so fast theres very little time to adjust. Also it didnt help that I had very little space to move.

I will post some more pics in Sports section tonight with exif... I think there is one but it wont have any info as its hosted on FB. Think I need more practice with WB
