So I just bought a cheap plate from DVLA, the V750 certificate should come in about 14 days with the ID number which I can use to assign to the car. But I have a couple of question

1 - Do I have to transfer the existing number off the car and pay £80? Or that just get held in some kind of limbo automatically?
2 - How long does it take between assigning the new Plate to the car (online), before it shows up in all the database?
3 - When do I get the new plate made?
4 - When do I inform my insurer?

I am basically a little confused about the steps and timing of it all. Surely there is a point where the new plate is assigned but I don't have new plates made up and have to drive a day or 2 with the old plate? Or do I get the plate made soon as I get the V750? /confused.

Thanks

1 - The plate you bought from the DVLA should include all the necessary transfer fees, once you go through the transfer process they send you notification that the transfer is complete (normally about 10 days). The original reg of you car goes back into the DVLA "pot" at this point, it could be re-assigned/sold to another vehicle.
2 - Should be simultaneous but we are talking about the DVLA here
3 - You can get number plates made here that are road legal and you don't need your V5 or any other documentation
4 - When you put the new plate on

Ive had one for a number of years ,so its a while since i did the process, what i do know is that you cant assign the new number untill you get a conformation certificatte which then allows you to get the new plates made, thats when you inform your insurance ,your old number should stay live if you ever put your new number on retention ,as Russ stated you do get a guide on the process, the DVLA are not to bad these days .

Did this on my motorbike couple of years back before the new road tax system started.

Your old plate does go into limbo and if you swap your personal reg to a new vehicle a couple of years later say, the original reg is reassigned back to the vehicle it came off.
If you bought the plate from dvla the £80 is included in the sale fee.

The v750 is like a bill of sale and you'll get other paperwork to send back to dvla along with the v5 from the vehicle you want to assign the new reg to (used to be mot and tax disc too, may just be mot now)
Dvla will then send a letter saying the transfer is accepted, mot and a V948 certificate, valid for six weeks.
The certificate you show to your plate maker for their records to get your plates made up.
You can fit the plates as soon as you have them.
Don't forget to inform your insurance when you change your reg.
New V5 comes in the post in a couple of weeks.

I just left the bike in the garage while it was all going through, a bit more awkward if it's a daily driver I guess.

Hope I've covered it all, enjoy your new reg!:)

As has been said, as you've bought from DVLA it should include the transfer fee, so no other fee payable (except for the purchase of plates)

If you get a pedantic copper, number plates are only legal if they show the makers name, post code and relevant british standard number and plates ordered with no need for documentation USUALLY don't.

Not saying you'll get pulled for it and you probably won't get grief over it.
I looked in to this as I wanted to run the smallest fully legal plate (the reason for buying a personal reg) I could on the bike and some of the cops do get the rulers out when you have a small plate.

I can vouch for this. I got pulled by a copper for having a small plate on my bike. I'd just overtaken a short line of traffic that was stuck behind a tractor, safely and within the speed limit. All of a sudden a police car pulled out from the back of the queue (should have spotted it), full blues & 2's and came screaming towards me. I pulled over to the side of the road to let her pass and she stopped behind me. She had managed to spot the plate from 200 yards. I deserved it. I knew the plate was small and I happened to be on the A272, a very popular biking road in the South East that's very "thoroughly" policed over a sunny weekend. She was fine with me and I with her. She didn't fine me but could have done. That's the last time I had the small plate fitted.

So the old plate goes on retention in my name automatically? I don't have to pay £80 for that as well? Because I do want to keep that plate when I sell the car in a few year's time.

Ah, that's good to know I don't need to pay 2 sets of assignment fees!

As far as I know the old plate is not in your name but doesn't get re-issued to another vehicle and is just reused on the vehicle it was originally issued to.
A mate across the road has a personal plate he has used on about 4 vehicles and all have gone back to original plate when he's moved the personal one to another one.
You will get charged a transfer fee to move from your existing vehicle to a new one.

Factor in the cost of the plates and the £25,000 fee to the insurance company for all that extra paperwork created by tapping a submit button on their computer

The fee that's included pays for the new plate to be transferred to you car but there's no guarantee you'll get you old plate back when you come to sell your car.

We put a private plate on my wife's car 2 years ago, I was looking for a car part and put the old reg in and it's been re-assigned to a different vehicle.

I think if you want that actual number plate to go back on the car you'll have to put it on retention yourself at extra cost.

My money's on the plate being C30 RAY - am I right or am I right? ;-)

Nope ! lol

There are no combination of C30 + my name or initial available, but i am not a fan of putting my name on plates anyway so it's wasn't a problem.

It\s just 5 digits, T5 (***) nice and short.

Mrs Nod's car came with her name as the last 3 letters. Wouldn't buy a plate but she'll probably keep it if she ever changes the car.
