Mind out of the gutter you lot!! Not in that way!

For those of you that know nothing of the Southend area in Essex there wont be much significance but here goes anyway....

Around 20 years ago there was a roller skating rink called Roller City, where I along with a large number of local teenagers spent large parts of their weekends.

A combination of skating going out of fashion and the increase in PL insurance meant the place shut down towards the end of the nineties.

The nearest skating rink to those living in Southend now is around a hour or so drive which is obviously out of reach for a lot of teenagers.

There have been calls for a new rink to be opened in the Southend area for a few years now and even petitions set up to convert a disused DIY warehouse in the town centre into one (this is now going to be yet another Tescos.... what a surprise).

A few months ago it was announced a new rink would be opening on a local industrial estate, an old school friend's husband got the manager's job there and asked me if I would be interested about getting some shots for them on opening night

So not only was I excited about actually going to the opening night party, I'm now going to be there as official photographer :D

Going to meet them tomorrow to discuss exactly what they're after and am contemplating getting some video footage on my 7D whilst doing a couple of laps of the rink..... it's got broken 7D written all over it though :bonk:

HAHAHA!!!

Used to go there regularly in the late 90s....... Managed to avoid the free crabs though

I've heard under the pier's pretty good for free crabs too, apparently you don't even need a bucket and spade

I went there once with a mate of mine and we picked up 2 girls.

To cut a long story short I let my mate have the blonde one to keep him happy, when he got her home he found out she was a he.:lol::lol:

the Crabs from TOTs were bigger, better and bought you chips !!!.

Russ, is this the one at Rochford? - Took the kids to the Maldon one wet day in the summer and they loved it...... What's the opening date? might have to try and organise a family outing once the initial rush has passed.

used to go to one called the nevada in bolton.. used to be fun trying to get up flights of stairs (and back) for drinks when wearing skates :-)

anyone oop north remember it.. what a dump it was.. great fun though!

Dave....... http://www.rollacity.co.uk/ Purdy's Way, opening on Saturday but launch party tickets sold out, first family session is on Suday.

Michelle... At the old one the "alcoholic" bar was upstairs :bonk:

wasn't quite old enough but managed to sneak up to the bar a few times.. hard to try and look older than your years when on wheels

Yeah to be honest it was the same with me, although I did go to another rink in January where I was (plenty) old enough to drink.... it was "interesting" to say the least

Cheers for the link Russ,
Try and avoid the bar whilst you have the 7D in your hands - Could be an expensive night out. Looking forward to your promo shots, and will definitely be dragging the kids there after payday.

I remember Southend, I used to go there every weekend in the mid sixties to visit my then girlfriend. I would catch the train from West Dorset to London on Friday evening, then on the underground to another station (can't remember the name?), then another train to Southend. Spend the weekend in Southend, walking the pier and pier train back (is that still there?). Also went to a place call the Kursall? Then back home Sunday night. Not bad considering my wages were less than £6/week, the return fare was 30 bob(about £1.50 in new money). Never been back there since, it was happy times though it has to be said, spending a weeks wages on a young lady was a bit ott. I soon learnt that the money was better spent on film and chemicals ;)

Seriously is it opening again? Used to go every Friday practically lived on my bauer turbos!! We still go to roller world in Colchester but its a bit of a trek. I actually still have my own skates with sims street snakes and have got my eldest into skating as well. Going to have to check this out as soon as we can!!

Is the opening this weekend? I'd still quit the day job to be a skate marshall. Sad as I'm now 37 and a father of two!

I lived in Bury St Edmunds in the early eighties for a while. The only nightlife was Rollerbury. I have to say that I was rubbish at it, and this was made worse by the fact that one of the other guys was a national coach or judge. He used to spend all night going backwards with nothing more than a wiggle of one foot, sniggering at me.

The bar was up a spiral staircase in the skates only/no shoes area. That kept the local A&E going.

For anyone that's interested here's a link to the photos I got last night, positive comments so far :)

Have to say the challenge of getting photos of people skating was a little trickier than I envisaged..... Taking pictures of people in a nightclub with low/flashing lighting is one thing but they're usually pretty stationary

Dealing with people whizzing past/towards you on skates with a smoke machine going is interesting. Much like putting you full beams on during fog, using too much flash is a disaster.
