The Guardian Website said:
Send us your best photographs and we'll publish a selection in G2, starting Monday October 29.

The pictures will be chosen and analysed by some of Britain's best photographers.

Entries should fall into one of the following five categories: portraiture, landscape, fashion and parties, still life, sport and action.

Photos must be emailed as JPEG files to my.photo*guardian.co.uk

Deadline for entry: Thursday October 25.

The deadline for submissions is tomorrow, so get your thinking caps on if you want to enter.

Don't forget to check out the full Terms and Conditions

1. The competition is open to non-professional photographers only, aged 18 and over.

gits :p

hmm

9. In consideration of GNM agreeing to consider the entry, each entrant grants to GNM an irrevocable, non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide licence for the full period of copyright to publish or otherwise use the entry in so far as is relevant to this specific competition in any way and at any time and to sub-license such rights to any third-party. GNM will use reasonable efforts to assert the entrant's moral rights in the photograph. However GNM may cut, edit, crop or arrange the entry as it sees fit and shall be entitled to sub-licence such right to third-parties.

"NO digital manipulation"

Where does that stop then? If you take your photos in RAW you are allowed no levels?,,, no sharpening??

. . . they will have been 'digitally manipulated' the second they're saved in any other format.

When you take the photo your camera digitally manipulates the image to produce the jpeg, you just have less control over it.

Yup. If you save as JPG in camera it applies a tonal curve to that image, so its already manipulated according to the manufacturer. If you use RAW, you have control over that tonal curve and with Adobe Camera RAW you can process it quite a lot. I'm guessing they want the usual. Photos that look like photos not fine art photos.

So is anyone going to do this? enter a photo?

You know I can't remember in my film days any compo rules that limited film developing methods or printing methods...

Hmm, linked to a different page earlier....

Reading the Terms & conditions it looks like a cheap way of gathering some publication images, they can use your image as they choose & don't even guarantee you any acknowledgement

The way I read the T&C's is that they can use it in any way they see fit with regards to the competition.......

Which is pretty much standard nowadays.

The way I read it is that they can use the photograph in any way they see fit for the length of copyright i.e. 75 years (read the "and at any time and " bit after the compo bit) not only that you are allowing them to sub-licence the image to anybody they choose.

I can understand the bit about for the purposes of the comp but not afterwards - seems unfair to me.

I've entered the Sports one - fingers crossed

Ah you see I read it different, but then I have no legal experience really, so could be wrong

for the full period of copyright to publish or otherwise (use the entry in so far as is relevant to this specific competition), in any way and at any time and to sub-license such rights

Thats how I read it, that "In so far as is relevant to this specific competition" is the overriding factor, and that they can use it in any way, but still adhering to the preceding factor of being relevant to this competition.
The same being at any time, and to sublicense such rights (IE to a publishing house, or sub contracted editing company etc etc)

I've entered the portraiture section!

Good luck to anyone that entered!

I agree with Marcel. I wouldn't get too het up about those terms. The worst that would happen is they might use your image to promote the feature here or abroad (hence the 3rd party thing I think) and I guess they could use it again if they bought back the feature in the future. They're not going to start selling on your photo of your mam to advertise hemroid cream or anything like that ;)

T&C's suck... bit like the BBC's "send us your best shots" (and we'll sell them on and profit from them for years to come whilst you get nothing...)

i get the impression the T&C are about par for the course, i sent one image off, figure for me personally got nothing to lose :)

I have submitted one for the landscape section. Othere people that have sent one in have you heard anything from them. Do you think they will get in touch if they are using any of them, or do we just have to buy the paper and see??

Hi Sue,

I submitted a photo but have not heard anything I think we just have to wait to see the paper!

Those T&Cs are about right for comps of this type...
and 'Digital Manipulation' means nothing that's not what we used to call 'Normal Darkroom Practice'...
i.e. lightening, darkening, dodging & burning, altering hue and contrast, 'softening' (we used to use a gauze filter over the enlarger lens, so it's acceptable to use gaussian blur to 'flatter' a portrait shot) and vignetting...
You cannot 'move' or 'alter' any elements of the original image (like cloning an annoying pylon out of the distance).

i didnt hear anything from them, but i got the impression they would want some 'words' to go with the picture so would have expected they would get in touch..
i bought the paper yesterday, and hired a cart horse to help get it home.. :)
frankly was a little disappointed in their 'guide'
whas G2? is that their online thing? thats where the photography thing continues throughout the week, or do we have to buy the paper each day to follow it?

G2 is the insert supplement that accompanies each day's issue.
