Got a big (as in 'never to be repeated') holiday coming up in a couple of months time. I'm considering taking a second battery with me in case - for whatever reason - my main battery or charger (as supplied with the camera when bought new) fail. I use a Canon EOS 70d & Canon's own batteries are not as cheap as generic alternatives. If I do buy a generic battery am I throwing good money after bad or are they (especially as I will only be buying a reserve that, hopefully, I will never use) reasonable value for money?

I use the expro ones for my Nikon D750, check if they make Canon ones.

It's fine to go off-brand if you are looking for an emergency backup battery that you aren't going to be relying on for years. I've yet to come across any that don't perform well initially.

I've been using 3 ExPro batteries alongside my 1 original Sony battery in my A6000 for the last 2 years with no difference in performance. They've all been used in rotation to shoot multiple weddings/events. I also used to do the same with my Canon kit previously.

I think it's ridiculous that OEMs charge £40-60 for the same batteries just because they're branded with their logo.

I use mostly off-brand batteries in my Canons, most of them have outlasted the useful life of the OEM ones. Just be careful that you get ones that the 70D will talk to, some of the cheaper LP-6 batteries are 'dumb' and will give you no end of trouble in more recent Canons.

Thanks for the warning. Any clues as to those batteries to avoid?

Another vote for Ex-Pro here I have used them in a variety of cameras for some time never had a problem, if you order them from ExProDirect who are based in Stockton on Tee's they are very Quick to deliver
these batteries are not the cheapest of the cheap but still a lot less than the originals.

Ive been using this brand for about 4 years in my 5Dmkiii and 80D. They seem to last just as long as the Canon batteries. 2 for less than £14.
