hi im new to photography and was wonderng if anyone has any friendly advice for me???
at the moment im just using a digital camera but im hoping to buy a DSLR for my birthday in march
does anyone have any information about the canon 550D/rebel t2i??
as this is the camera i would like to buy
thankyou :)

:welcome:

I use an earlier model from this range and find it great for my lil hands ;) I hope you realise that this is an expensive hobby... Have you tried this camera? Actually held it? If not I would strongly recommend that you handle a few before you make a purchase.

The camera is not quite as important as the lens you have, this will depend upon what you intend to photograph.

Get down to Jessops and have a bit of a fiddle with all the cameras, pick the one that feels right and you find easy to use. Then look at the glass (thats the expensive bit). What do you want to take photos of?

I note you said Rebel T2i, are you thinking of getting a grey import? I'd advise anyone to steer clear of the packages on places like ebay - the deal isn't that great and usually the accessories are not great standard. Pick up a copy of PhotoPlus or something and there are pages of offers with decent accessory bundles.

The 550D is a very capable camera. Both for stills and video. Read the full review from DPReview:

To get the best out of it, think of investing in some good glass as opposed to sticking with the kit lens. Depending on your budget and photographic interests, you will get some excellent lens recommendations here.

and i also like to take portrait photos (mainly of family and friends)

Hi Vicky,

I was in the same position as you a few months ago. While photography was my main aim with the purchase of the 550d, I really wanted to get into video as well and this camera allows that.

I would ask the question do you really need video? If not than maybe you should consider the 500d. Its available on amazon at around £500 with the kit lens although I have seen lows** of £480. This saves you around £150 allowing you to pick up a Canon 50mm f1.8 (£79 on amazon) and a good head start to another lens.

Lastly the most important thing is to get a camera in your hands and start shooting asap!

**Trick with Amazon is to try and snipe a low price since its a computer that adjusts the prices to current market value daily and sometimes every few hours!

Do you need video?

If you don't then you'll get far more for your budget looking at a 450D. That's still a belting little camera...it just doesn't do video.

Don't get worried about the Megapixel difference between that and the 550D, it'll only make a massive difference if you're doing loads of cropping or wanting to print out pictures as big as a wall (I've got poster sized prints from my old 450D that are crystal clear).

In terms of lenses, the 18-55 kit lens is fine for 95% of things except wildlife to get you started. If you're wanting to get decent animal shots from a distance then a decent zoom is your next stop. 55-250mm Canon is a very decent Stabilised lens (makes sure you get IS on the zoom) for cheap money.

With lenses though, you get what you pay for. You can do a decent job with a £150 55-250 lens. You'll do a much better job of capturing wildlife with a 400mm 2.8L lens at about £5,000....and everything in between.

If you need / want video, then the 550D is supposed to be great.

yea i kinda need the video because im going to be using it for home videos aswell :)

iv had a go at the nikon d90 and d5000 because my cousin has them but he said to get the canon 550d because it was better

Hi. I have the 500d. It also has HD video, though I have heard that the 550 performs a bit better in low light situations. I didn't try before you buy, but have no complaints with the feel and build quality of the camera, and am more than happy with the pictures it produces..and short comings are mine...not the cameras. Amazon often has some good deals. Happy hunting

Ive just bought the 550d aswell its awesome, the better screen, higher frames per second, and the video swung it for me not to mention the extta MP

But as everyone says lens is more important then the body so if your on a tight budget get the 500 body and get a good lens

thanks for all the replies everyone :)
wow no matter where i look i cant seem to find any major complaints about the 550d so i shall get that (when i save up a bit more haha )
does anyone have any suggestions on what lenses i should get mainly for taking portraits??
