Hey everyone. I'm pretty new to photography and would like some pre-purchase advice! I wasn't sure of the most appropriate subforum (the array is almost as bewildering as the choice of cameras) but if you think I'll get a better response elsewhere, I'll gladly/begrudgingly move along... :)

I'm trying to decide on a replacement for my 6-year old £60 blurry-pixel-randomiser/paper weight. I don't know too much (yet) about photography so please forgive my poor use of terminology. I want to be able to take decent photos in macro and I also dig the idea of a telephoto lens. I want to be able to experiment and I really dig that funky bokeh!

As well as for my own uses, I'm interested in providing photographs to the Wikipedia (and related) project(s) - e.g. buildings around the city, my university, photos of lab equipment etc. I hope, ultimately, to be awarded a photographic barnstar!

I was originally planning to buy a Canon a710 but thought the limited focal lengths might limit my experience and creativity.

I considered the Canon S5 IS but read that is gives chromatic aberration at the extremes of its zoom. One review said that the degree of chromatic aberration is still good for a 12x lens.
If a 12x lens leads to chromatic aberration, is a long-zoom lens such as this, incompatible with quality macro photos?

Disappointed by the Canon S5 news, I started to flounder and eventually made my way here. There are so many cameras with so many problems that it becomes difficult to sort through them. I can't exceed £200 (for which a Canon S5 seems to be possible on eBay).

Thanks in advance for any insight you can offer!

Welcome! For what your after, I tihnk you need to go for something with interchangeable lenses as your after macro and telephot and will probably need a wide angle for buildings etc. Ther's plenty of good s/h DSLR with or without lenses and you can add to the collection when budget permits rather than trying to find one camera that does everything.

Good luck with your search :)

hello and welcome to the forum

as said above a (D)slr with a couple of good zooms or a set of primes for each of your preferences as budget permits
