The examples of gels being attached to studio lights that I have seen involve clipping a sheet of gel to the front of the flash. However, is it possible to do this when you are using a modifier such as a softbox or an octobox?

Yes, but it's more common to clip them to the front of one of the diffusers

Garry do you need larger sized gel's than the standard ones you can buy if you are going to do that? The reason I am asking this is that I suspect what I need is the Elinchrom d-lite 200 rx given the size of my living room but I would prefer to buy the 400 as it seems more future proof and costs roughly the same. To bring the power down I was going to use ND gels. What do you think about this? Is there some reason it is better to go for the 200? Are gels a really big pain in the bum?

I plan to use a large'ish softbox on one and use the other either for lighting a background or for creating a hair or rim light in conjunction with a reflector to fill in the shadows.

You can get gels in all sorts or sizes, including wide rolls.

Gels are fine, but bear in mind that if you fit say a 0.6 (2 stop) gel you will also reduce the effective power of the modelling light to a quarter, which will render it virtually useless. When you need to reduce the power of just one head, that is usually the best (only) way of doing it, but if you want the power reduction to apply to all heads, it's easier to fit a ND filter to the lens - assuming that the lens will still autofocus with it on, which good quality lenses on decent cameras will normally do.

Too much power can be a mistake, especially when aggravated by not having enough power adjustment on the flash. Most people, most of the time, are better off with lower powered flash heads - it's easy to increase the ISO by 1 or 2 stops if required than it is to reduce the effective power of the flash.

Hmm so even with a 100 or 135cm softbox you still think it's better off going for the 200 for use in living rooms as opposed to a pro-studio setting?

Yes
