I'm a newbie to photography and would like to say Hi to all members. Having just got a Canon 500D DSLR, I am just itching to get out and try the machine (although I will have a lot of learning to do). Unfortunately, snow is restricting travel just now.

 Hi and welcome to TP. Whilst the weather is bad take a good look around here..it has library of good information..and inspiration.

Thanks, I am already impressed with a lot of the shots. I see you have the Canon 70-200mm lens. This was the one I was considering buying today but went for the 18-200mm f.3.5 - 5.6, based on price and that it had Image Stabilizer. Hands are not as steady as they used to be.

IS can make alot of difference. I like to shoot sports and nature and particularly in sports IS does not make much difference, in fact it can slow AF as far as I am aware. However the 18-200mm is a great lens and if the hands are not so steady then IS will help alot. I only have the one lens so at least you have a much wider angle to play with. I am struggling with only having a minimum of 70mm. The only good thing is that it makes me think motr about how to take much shots.

G'day, BIGEYE and Grayman!
I'm interested in your comments re IS lenses: do you know, Grayman, whether they cope with Essential Tremors in ordinary use, i.e. mostly landscapes and nature photography. I don't have any lenses with IS thus far but I am thinking of upgrading my 'kit' lens to a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 but no IS. What do you reckon?:

Hi  and :welcome: to TP.
