You need to have a table that the pigeons can't access. Maybe one with a roof (which they will sit on!) and some wire "bars" so they can't get through but the smaller birds can. I put some screws into the table and under the roof bit and stretched green garden wire between them vertically which worked for me.

....the pigeons need to eat as well and they are very useful in clearing up under the table which reduces the rat/mouse problem too.

Hi Joe, are you referring to a few wood Pigeons or a lot of feral Pigeons. A table is an open invite for them as it does provide easy access to the food. For an outlay of about £15-£20 you could get a bird feeder stand from a garden centre or DIY store for the smaller birds. There quite a few on the bird forum that have setups, if you can provide a fairly wide angle shot of the area you will be using then I am sure there will be plently of people who can give you a few tips for setting it up.

I made a wire cage over my flat table.1.5 or 2 inch mesh, the little birds can get in, the big greedy buggers can`t.

Just take it off when you want to take some shots.

For about £1.50 ish go to wilkos and buy some green garden wire then tack it round the table. You'll need 2 lines to keep em out. I had the same problem and sorted it like this. Blackbirds can hop in and out merrily whilst the greedy pigeons no longer have access.

Try a bird feeder suspended in some way, the pigeons will still have a try but it will be more difficult for them to get at it. If you also provide some food on the table the pigeons are more likely to go there - they prefer eating from a flat surface.

I suggest a feeder suitable for sunflower hearts which a lot of birds like. If you have squirrels visiting your garden then get a metal feeder - squirrels will eat through anything else.

If you want a more natural look you could fix a shallow container (eg small plastic tray) on one side of a dead branch so it can't be seen from the other side. If you position the branch horizontally the container can be filled with seeds. Alternative buy fat cake for birds and melt a little of it into the tray. When it sets the branch can be set up in any way; or make your own mix from suet and seeds.

get a bird seed hanger then only the little birds can get the seed, I have two collared doves that come to visit now and again and its quite comical to watch, I do also throw seed & crumpled suet balls onto the garage roof for the larger birds, but this has started to bring feral pigeons
