I want to put a new personal website together mainly for hosting some personal galleries and maybe a blog.

I was considering using GoDaddy with their managed Wordpress service, but as I am a Mac user, I need to install other software (MAMP) as well, and I'd rather keep everything a bit more together.

I haven't done anything like this in years since I used to work with MS FrontPage (yes, that long ago!) so was looking for some advice. I may want to add a shop at some point, but best I work on getting some decent content on their first !!

So, any advice would be gratefully received...

Steve

As said no need for local software. Heck you likely don't even need ftp as you can just use the inbuilt photo loaders and plugin loaders.

have they made finder writable when using ftp yet? (used to be that using finder when connecting to ftp it was read only)

that as an aside, recommended host around these parts is normally TSO Host. not necessarily the cheapest but by far exceeded by their level of support and service.

otherwise what kind of gallery do you want, it's a bit of a can of worms.

if you're hosting it online you shouldn't need to install anything on your mac as everything is done via an ftp package to upload the files and then a web browser.
Do you not design locally and then upload ? MAMP is used to run WP locally so that you can design offline.

I've actually been looking at the TSO host site this morning and they look quite interesting. I actually work in the IT/hosting industry, but sell at an Enterprise level, so not quite up on the lower tier providers.

As for the kind of Gallery, just something to showcase my personal work really, it's just a way of getting stuff online without having to rely on the likes of Flickr. The NextGEN plugin looks like the sort of thing I'm after...

I'm currently putting something similar up using Squarespace, it all depends whether you want to do it for free or low cost. Squarespace works out about £5.50/month paying for a year upfront. Cheaper than most magazine subscriptions.

No, there's no need. Wordpress now incorporates so many great free templates and the rest is done via plugins. I can put together a decent looking blog in less than an hour. If you want to test it just sign up for a free blog on wordpress.com.

Depends what you mean by design. If it is a whole new theme, then yes. If it is little tweaks then no. I just switch on one of the maintenance plugins such that I can see the design but nobody else can, except for robots which don't care about the design.

And if it is content related then again I do that online but not publish it yet.

I like the standard Wordpress jetpack mosaic plugin. Works for me.

Correct. Files can upload directly up to 32mbs, I think. And even for bulk upload you don't need an ftp.
Or more if you change the php/Apache settings :)

I actually use the Amazon S3 plugin such that my images can be full size and are served from the Amazon cloud. It's cheaper than a cup of coffee per year.

No, for the various wordpress sites I look after an administer, I've always done it online. Occasionally at a private URL and with search engine reporting turned off, but it means that once I'm happy, all I have to do is to tell search engines rather than having to upload it.

+1 for SquareSpace..metrics and blog included, plenty of templates to chose from and all highly customizable, overall great value

Makes sense. Might have a look at that though I have a generous hosting plan with domainspricedright which is plenty for all my images.
