Have just connected drive to Mac and it is working away happily. I shut the machine down at night - do I have to eject the ext drive before I shut down and switch everything off?

Next thing.

How can I confirm that everything on the hard disc has been copied over by Time Machine? When I click on the G-Drive icon on the Desktop I get a list of files but can’t see, for example, the Aperture and iPhoto libraries.

I suspect there may be more questions to follow....

You can right click the time machine icon in the top bar and pick "Enter time machine". This gives you a nice UI to browse the backup in by date etc.

Or you can open the drive in Finder, all there still but a bit more complex to navigate manually.

Have done that but can’t find photo files in any of the folders - where should I look?

Those library files are bundles, you can't and shouldn't go browsing within them unless you really know what you are doing...

The cool thing about time machine is that if you have say; Aperture (or any other app), open and you enter time machine it will show you the files automatically at a point in time...

You can browse the files in Time machine if you really want.

Go to the drive where time machine archives too.

Select a date: You'll then see finder expand and show you Macintosh HD Click on that and next choose Users. Pick your user ID. you'll then see a list of folders where your files are. You can look in there for the files you are after.

However the time Machine UI is a lot quicker and easier if you need to retrieve files quickly
