Fun car....MX5 or Cooper s?

Cool cars.
My wife will end up with a mini in the future.....she doesn't know what a cooper s is so she'll just think it a standard mini

That's the way to go. I just remembered that my lad has had 2 Mini's himself, it must be in the blood

Lovely pictures there Steve.

Thanks, my Clubbie picture was taken at the last Mini at Home show, held in the car park of the Oxford plant. I'd spent two days on it beforehand to get it that clean!

Good grief, that's bright!

Who needs the sun, as long as it's not raining, it's roof down, hats, coats & scarfs on

She's arrived......Where's the sun gone?

You don't need sun. All you need is for it not to be raining too hard or to not have to stop if it's just pelting down rather than there being an absolute deluge. Remember that as long as you're moving most of the rain just goes over the car and not inside.

It's got a good heater...
Just been for a blast with the roof down....

If When you do get caught short and the carpets get wet, a good long drive with the heater on full blast down at your feet (with the roof down, once the weather's improved!) will help dry the carpets and avoid the dreaded footwell rot.

I can pull the soft top up from the drivers seat so if it is raining heavily it's often just a matter of stopping and pulling it up and doing up the two clamps. It really doesn't take all that long. But some may need to get out to put the roof up.

That's definitely a colour I'd pick. I like the Mercedes SLC final editions - it's a very similar yellow - but they are way over £30k - about £25k more than I want to spend :p

The Mk 1 and 2 (including the 2.5) tops are very quick to put up - faster than the electric hard top that Mrs Nod's has. I think the latest model's roof is supposed to be raised by 2 people from the outside - the clearance over the roll bars is very tight so it can get hung up if it gets a bit skewed.

The fiddliest I've had was the Lotus Elise MK1, that was a bit of a PITA. When it went in for a service one day some bloke came and chatted to me and asked how I liked the car specifically asking about the fiddly roof. I said yes it was fiddly but at least everything lined up, not like in my MG days when nothing lined up. He just laughed and we parted company but then the dealership guy came up to me and said "Do you know who that was?" I didn't. Apparently he was some famous racing driver who's name I still can't remember.

I hope that was an interesting story :D

I tried an Elise on some years ago and although I did manage to get into it with a degree of dignity, my exit was only possibly by literally rolling out of it. Not quite as bad as when I managed to get into an F2 racing car's cockpit and almost needed a forklift to heave me up out of it!!! I'm a snug fit in the Mazda but can get in and out unaided and without loud noises (depending on what I had for lunch!!!)

New car looks great - congrats @Bobsyeruncle .

I've had 3x Mk1 MX5s and 1x Mk3.5 and 1x Mk3.75 - the latter two being roadsters with the power hard top. I've also had an R53 Cooper S (the supercharged one) and an R56 (the turbo charged one).

Loved them all as a weekend toy/second car - the Minis were more fun to throw around and my R53 had the smaller pulley so went like stink. I always felt that I wanted to be driving everywhere at full throttle though. Oh that supercharger whine was so addictive and a better built car than the R56.

The MX5 was better at cruising with the roof down - in all weathers, day and night I might add - as long as nothing falling from the sky my roof was down. Pretty special on a cool summer night riding along the coast road with the roof down.

I also did the 'Run the Ring' in my most recent MX5 - the whole way round the M25 at midnight with the roof down for charity.

Both makes are just at home on the race track too.

I'm currently in the market for another weekend toy having just sold my '67 Beetle and am again looking at MX5s and Minis - but also considering Golf GTis too.

Have fun - I'm sure you are aware but the front chassis legs can rot away on MX5s of that age so might be worth checking as usually hidden behind an undertray.
