What is Full Frame? like i mean what is different about if from, say a Canon 400D

Like it says Canon 1DS MkIII Full Frame on some websites and i just wanted to know the the full frame meant

PS I don't want this to turn in to a Canon vs Nikon war. Each to there own as i say :)

"full Frame sensor " -> Full Frame of film

"Cropped sensors" -> A fraction of a frame of film

ie on a Full Frame sensor a 200mm lens gives you the field of view of 200mm while on a cropped sensor (say 1.6) it would give you the field of view of a 320mm lens

bla bla ish etc :D

The other side to it is the effect on the depth of field DOF - DOF is dependent on the subject distance and the actual lens length (and f-stop of course).

In order words, for a particular shot at say 135mm F2.8 on a full frame, for a 1.6x crop body an 85mm lens would give the same field of view but it would need an aperture much larger to get the same DOF.

This is why compacts can't blur out the backgrounds at all, because the sensors are so small, maybe 1/40th of a 35mm frame.

Hope that helps.

The 400D sensor is a 1.6 crop, so if you divide a full frame by 1.6 you get the 400D. Full frame is the size of a 35mm negative.
