Hi chaps, I'm really pleased with my 550d ... I spent some money on a canon 100-400 and a 25-105 L but almost every time I browse images shot with either of these two lenses and see something really impressive it's almost always been shot with a 5D MKII ... the IQ of these f/fs seems stunning but the cost of the 5D is beyond me, are there any reasonable f/fs that can compare ? Best Roger

You could get a full frame 5D MK I second hand for around £600. It's not going to have the same colour depth and dynamic range but it's still got the full frame pixie dust IMO. ;)

What's your budget? A used 5d2 body can be had for around £1100-1200...depending on condition..

It may not also have the 5DII noise banding or black dots. :D

The old 'uns can still teach the young 'uns a thing or two. :D

There are the rumours of the 5DIII (or 5Dx) being announced next month so there may be a few more second hand 5DI or 5DIIs coming onto the market just afterwards.

There'll always be another camera just around the corner though..

And even if they announce it next month - production won't be for a few months after... So I wouldn't expect a rush of 5d2's just yet..

From the comparison sites I've seen I still prefer the slightly softer images you get with a Classic (Mk1) as opposed to Mk2. Not sure I agree about colour depth etc, the images look remarkably similar to me, but each to their own, neither is exactly a bad camera :)
An alternative might be a 1DMk2, only 1.3 crop and at least one stop worse in the noise department but up to 800 Iso there's little to choose between the two, similar sort of price, just the 1D has better Af and build quality, dodgy buttons and menus though. I have both and I struggle to know which I prefer at times.

Thanks so much chaps, I think the 5D mkI might be the way to go, it's cheap enough for me to be able to keep the 550d (for a while) until I've assessed the 5d ... good of you all to take the time. Roger

Hi Roger,

I recently went from a 50D to a 5D and despite the relative step backwards in age and processor, I would never go back to a (non 1 series) crop!

Looking to do the same myself and go for a second hand mk1 or mk2, but I don't really know which I would prefer. Might not be for a little bit that I can get it so have a bit of time to do some research, but hopefully there will be a few more bodies for sale now the mk3 has come out. I will get a full frame camera one day!

Jo

Isn't life difficult ... I've just read a stunning review of the 5D MK II, it makes me think that if I tried to be 'cheap' and went for a MK I I'd be after a MK II later in the year and my scrooge like tendencies would actually cost me !
