What happened to the Nikon D50?

I gave up.

I have it charged up, memory card installed, can't work it :crying:
Set it to "Auto" switch it on and take photos.

Have you read the manual or guides?

The manual is too small to read and I don't have enough printer paper to print out a 169 page manual I found on Google last week :(

Don't print it out, read it on the screen, you only need the basic section for now.

Just give this a read.

Or this.

I can't think of any cameras that for the most part in Auto don't switch on, focus and take a photo exactly the same so the D50 won't be any different than what ever other cameras youve used.

I'll have a read between now and March 13th, my first comic con.

Take some photos right now, stick them up for people to help see where you need to improve.

NO! Read it NOW and then get out there and practice with it until you can't stand the sight of the camera anymore. Only then will you be ready to go to Comic Con and get some decent pictures. Stop wasting time (and money) looking on eBay for the next purchase as you will just have the same issues with that ... and the next one ... and the ones after that.

Every camera is a little bit different to the last one or the next one and the only way to get good results is to use it. I have owned and used several different Nikon cameras and each one takes time to get to know. When I got my current camera (D750) it took about 2000 images before I felt in complete control and able to select the settings I needed for each photographic situation and the D750 was a "downgrade" from the D800. Lord knows how many shots it would take me to get accustomed to another brand of camera.

Reading reviews and watching YouTube videos WILL NOT help you master any camera - you actually have to use it. PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT.

Richard, I'm sorry if this comes across as being a bit brutal but you are ignoring all the advice you've been getting on various threads. I understand you may have some learning difficulties and I sympathise with that but Jeez mate just stick the D50 in AUTO, go take some pictures with it and understand why you get the results you get,

You need to be more precise about what you can’t work, eg:

1.Is it difficult for you to hold? To heavy?
2. Difficult to see through the viewfinder?
3. Difficult to operate the controls?

and so on.

Your Flickr photos were taken with a Canon Powershot SX120 IS — was that difficult to use? Why? What don’t you like about the photos?

To me the Canon seems the right sort of camera for you for those sort of photos. Or a mobile phone camera.

Nobody can advise you if you don’t give more details about what you want to do and what the difficulty is.

It's not that I don't like the photos, people on here have complained about them.

1) It is quite heavy but that's not the problem
2) The view finder doesn't work, the small screen is too small to see
3) The controls are quite difficult to operate yes

2) do you have impaired eyesight?

2) You do know that you're supposed to look through the little window at the top of the camera, don't you?

If your not willing to learn or accept help from forum users I'd recommend you just use a decent mobile phone for your photography needs. Stop buying cameras as your just wasting your money, you are running from one problem to another.
Personally I think you should stick with the D50 and learn how to use it, there's plenty of help out there.
I remember when I first got my dlsr and I thought it was broke , I just wasnt using it right, it takes time to master and once you understand the basics you will be up and running

If you like the photos from the Canon then just stick to that. The advice you get from a forum is always going to say get a new camera, its a bit like going on a car forum talking about your standard Fiesta and someone will suggest that you get a BAC Mono!
The best way to improve your photos is to ask why people do not rate them highly. I looked at your flickr photos a week ago and, as far as I recall, I would say that you need to decide what the actual subject is and work on composition to emphasise it. Get closer and fill the frame would be my overall advice.

Your equals you're and I am willing to learn, I just have a learning disability as previously mentioned.

Way to thank someone for offering help. Criticise someone's grammar.

I honestly think between all of your threads you have been given some great advise, I guess now it's up to you what you do with it.
Take it onboard and get better with what you have our keep spending money on another 6 low end cameras that will all do the exact same thing.

I've got a Nikon D50 buried away. I'm way too far but happy to do a Zoom or some video call one evening to walk you around it buddy if that helps
That would be great mate, give me a shout by email (which is in my profile) or I'll PM you my mobile number.

Great gesture. I'm sure with a basic session, Rich can get out taking photos, get used to the camera and can go to Comic Con and come back with some good photos.

Great, I'll drop you a PM now. Wednesday evening would work good for me, ideally from around 7:30 pm if not too late for you.

I just read and responded to your PM, if you can do a very brief Zoom or MS Teams session on Wednesday I'm in, as mentioned in the PM I have my Martial Arts class at 8, and have to get there by 5 to to sign in and that.

@MrRichAllen1976 I wish you the best of luck in finding and using a camera if you can learn to use it, but with you I find that you do NOT like any advice given as members are trying to help you, but you come back at them sadly. As I have already said YOU HAVE A CAMERA so go out and use that, other wise comic con will come and go and you WILL NOT have any good shots of it at all. I have just come back from a jazz gig YET I KNOW in my mind of all the shots taken I WILL have some good shots. With the camera you have practice and practice, and then practice more as we are only trying to help you.

That's the kind of thing that makes me happy to be associated with this place. Very nice Gesture.

2)- If the viewfinder doesn’t work but the rear screen does it probably means you’re in live view which on a DSLR means the mirror’s up and hence the view finder won’t work. Check your settings :)

I would think the D50 predates Live View

Loving the forum camaraderie shown here - great stuff
You've learnt loads already Rich, keep going

I just wonder if instead of keep buying cheap cameras the OP would be better off with one of these smartphone gimble things.

Lencarta also have some refurbished ones around the £50-100 mark

By my reckoning he has spent thick end of £100 on cheap cameras etc which for a variety or reasons are not suitable so it might be time just to cut his losses.

Might be good but we don’t know what phone he has. However he seem to have operated his original Powershot (which has IS) and will do the sort of photos he’s put on Flickr, so I’m not sure what he hopes for with a different camera.

My phone is a Moto G5 Play (Android), nice phone but I'm due an upgrade in about 2 and half years I think.

That little Canon SX 20 I bought from CEX in July 2019 is a nice little camera, the results are good and it does full HD video, just point and shoot.

And that Sony DSC-W800 I got on eBay last year's quite good.

I managed to cancel the bid on that D90 by the way, contacted the seller and he told me how to retract the bid.
