what do you think of this shot, I was disappointed by the amount of distortion straight from the camera,
should I just accept it, I can of course correct it in post production but is this a symptom of a cheaper lens wide open

Difficult to tell from that shot. You've got the camera pointing up and at a slight angle, so the leaning buildings may well be perspective rather than lens distortion. Try a shot straight on at a brick wall or something else with straight lines.
