So, after taking the advice of numerous people on here I've taken the plunge and purchased a Fuji XT-1 with 18-135mm. I'm very pleased so far and I'm thinking about my next purchase already.

I used to love my 10-20mm wide angle when I had my Canon 40D and fancy getting one for my Fuji, but which one. As I see it I have 3 choices

1. The 10-24mm, seems to get good reviews from what I've seen
2. 14mm f2.8, should be sharper than the 10-24, slightly cheaper and bigger aperture
3. 16mm f1.4, even bigger aperture and weather proofing

Anyone experience of these any recommendations?

Hello Alex.

I've not had the 10-24 (prefer faster primes) but it is well regarded, but seem to have read it's not as sharp as the 14 or 16 (guess thats primes vs zoom). Bu the new 16mm looks fantastic, especially with the close focal distance! and the separation at 1.4 looks great.

Wasn't overly fussed by the 14mm but its a tad too wide for my tastes. no other reasons.

Seem to be some cheep 14mm going used though!

Hi Alex
I own the 10-24 and I think it is a great lens, I have never used either of the primes you mention but being primes it is likely they are a little sharper but against that the zoom will be more versatile
and it has a much greater angle of view at the wide end if you like that sort of thing which I do, all matter of taste of course.
I have owned and sold three primes for this system the18, 23, and the 35 and the only one I miss is the 23mm, good luck deciding

Regards Bob

10-24 has stabilization too, you get that stop back vs the 14.

Depends if you need that 10-14 ultra wide lens I suppose.

Hi Alex, Coming from Nikon to Fuji, I always had a soft spot for my Sigma 10-20mm, so when Fuji released the 10-24mm, I had to have it. I don't regret it even after nearly a year of ownership. It is such a versatile lens. Since owning it, I have bought the Samyang 8mm and the Fuji 35mm F/1.4, but I keep returning to the 10-24mm.

Seems like the 10-24 May be the choice for me. I like the idea of the greater viewing angle and if it's as sharp as the 18-135 I should be more than happy. I liked the idea of the f1.4 on the 16mm and the weather sealing but I'm not sure how much I'd actually use the lens that wide open. The Samyang is tempting at that price but I'm not sure if I could live without the AF just yet. I'm only just getting used to the camera after years of Canon and then a two year break from photography.

I still like the idea of having a prime in my collection, so maybe I could add a longer focal length in the future, something like the 23mm.

I have the Samyang 8mm and the 18-55 kit lens. I wanted something in between. I looked at the 12mm but the are reports that some copies are less than sharp. Thought about the 14mm but it wasn't giving me too much increase over the 18. Finally plumped for the 10-24. Don't know how valid it is but Ken Rockwell says it is the best lens Fuji make.
Seems sharp enough to me.

I've owned both the XF14mm and then bought the 10-24mm, I personally thought the XF14mm wasn't wide enough for my landscape photography. That's were the XF10-24mm excels with the 10mm end side of things etc, maybe too wide for some but you do get used to it after a while.

Check out this link (below), a chap called Jeff Carter, he shoots with a XF10-24mm lens with GREAT effect, click on his images lower down the page via the link, amazing images with the 10-24mm lens;

This is an interesting subject. A long time ago I had a Sigma 10-20 on a Canon Crop sensor. On reviewing my pictures, I found that most where shot around 14mm. The 14mm was one of the first lenses I added to by Fuji stable (to be used on an X-E2). I absolutely love the 14mm, its sharp, the FOV is great and it's also compact (and takes the same 58mm size and hood as the 18-55mm, so complements it very well.

Since then I've added the Samyang 8mm, a great fun lens, and very wide angle if you get it low down (minimising the fish eye effect),

Up until this point I was working on keeping my Fuji kit compact, and I felt that the 10-24 was bulky, and if I was going to have a lens that bulky I might as well have a DSLR (the same applies to the 50-140), but .... I have since bought a Samyang 12mm, an XT-1 and an 18-135mm !!! Both the lenses are a step up in filter size (67mm), and the X-T1 handles the bigger lenses very well, so my mind is changing. I'm not sure about the 12mm at the moment, as it is very wide, and wide compositions demand care, as it is all too easy to get something in the frame that you will crop out, and could have used the 14mm for anyway!

I also have a FF DSLR, I'm getting married later this week, and after the wedding/honeymoon, I'm giving serious thought to chopping in the DSLR and moving completely over to Fuji, and at that point, I have to consider the 10-24mm, but I'm still not parting with the 14mm, it's just too lovely a thing, and its ideal when you want to travel light.

Certainly some food for thought. I must admit I hadn't even considered the Samyang 12mm till now but I might go and have a look as it would free up some cash towards another lens. Some lovely shots there Pete and removes any fears I had about sharpness.

I don't think I'm any closer to a decision as no one lens seems to stand head and shoulders above the rest and they all have their plus points. A bit more research and may be I need to get my hands on a few to see which I prefer. Unfortunately I'm off back to Saudi tomorrow but it gives me some time to make up my mind.

Fantastic shot. There is something about this lens.
The colour, sharpness, rendering etc. just wonderful

I have the 14mm f2.8 and 16mm f1.4.

The 14mm is absolutely fantastic when stopped down to f5.6 - it's tack sharp to the edges and great for landscape and architecture. It's also a great size/weight and the filter size means cheaper NDs compared with the larger lenses. It isn't really fast and doesn't have OIS but I don't really see these as issues; I've shot in a mosque at something like 1/30th or less and it was fine - no blur at all.

The 16mm f1.4 is optically excellent - sharp and contrasty, plus you can blur backgrounds when focusing close to an object.

If you truly want a wideangle then the 16 may not be wide enough, plus you wouldn't really need a fast lens for wideangle work. The 16mm for me is my normal day to day lens as it's quite flexible in what I can shoot.

I''ve never used the 10-24 but can well believe it's an excellent lens. The main reasons I went with the 14mm were the price at the time, plus reviews were very positive. I don't think you could go wrong with either.

We are spoiled for choice by Fujifilm.
They are all very good for wideangle.

I have the 14 mm as well and my experience is very similar to yours.

this is a decision i am going to have to make one day.. so keeping a close eye on this thread and also the examples that are being posted. Itake it any correction for distortion is being handled in camera when it come to the fuji lenses?

I did consider the 10-24, but I wanted something small and light to go on my XT-10 so I opted for the 14mm. I like it so far, I use a 20mm on full frame so it's not too far off that in terms of field of view. I've not done any detailed pixel peeping of the images from it yet though!

Not adding much, but I have to say Fuji's 10-24mm is much much better than Canon's 17-40mm I used to love on Canon full frame.

It's better in every way, especially sharpness. My X-E2 is pretty much welded with 10-24mm.

That is what i used to use on full frame and indoor stuff. Im glad you have said that as its nice to know but on the other hand im still trying to struggling to find a reason to go for one or the other.

Thank you to everyone for their input. Some cracking shots by everyone. :)

I thought this was going to be a fairly easy choice with everyone's assistance, but it appears not, at least from an IQ perspective. I'm leaning more towards the 10-24mm for it's flexibility but if I find the right deal on a 14mm (new or second hand) then that may just be the winner.

Got my 10-24 last week and put my 14mm in the classifieds. However I've spent this morning out with both lenses and I've decided to return the 10-24 and keep the 14. Very little to choose between the two even when pixel peeping, although the 14 just edges it. My reason for returning the zoom is I'm just so used to using primes now that it feels strange using the zoom. It's also quite a bit bigger for carrying around.

It is a tough one. I used to have both the 14mm and the 10-24mm until I sold the 14mm a week ago. I loved both of them but I want to get the 16mm and one of these two lenses had to go.
