I am looking to purchase TWO identical bodies and lenses for my schools and nurseries work - possibly also events.
I will be creating a set of equipment dedicated to this area of my work.
I currently use Canon gear overall and am happy with them BUT they cannot cope adequately with bar codes required for SIMS work with schools.
The two makes that stand out in this area are Nikon and Fuji, with possibly an 80mm prime lens.

Which body and lens would folk recommend, and why?
Does anyone know where I could get such equipment at reasonable prices, and SOON?

Any other help and advice would be appreciated.

I know nothing about these bodies, i'm a D90 user myself

but there's been one fuji s5 pro for sale in the classifieds here, its being sold by a well respected member of these forums and I think its still for sale

Sorry I can't really add anything constructive, but I'm just curious about your comment about not coping with bar codes, how do you mean?

Other then that, I can tell you the last few times I've had my picture taken at secondary school or college it's always been S5's they're using (for the fuji colour rendition and DR).

The thing is with the Fuji S5 pro,it's very good at turning out jpeg,if you don't want to shoot raw.
The D200,is best if you want to work with raw files.

I would think the D200 would be easier to pick up at a good price.

Review of both cameras are still up at DP -reviews :)

Thanks for that input so far - do others have views?

In what way is the D200 "best if you want to work with raw files"? Given that the S5 has a greater dynamic range ,and produces cleaner high iso images to boot, I'd argue the opposite.

I've owned both (at the same time) btw....

How tight is the budget? Is the D2X also worth considering....?

What's the lens budget? The Nikon 85mm 1.8 immediately leaps out but if the budget is larger the newer AF-S version will focus a lot faster and if you're feeling really flush the 85mm 1.4 AF-S is simply glorious.

The budget is minimal - these cameras are to be work-horses not top of the range - so efficient and effective is the order of the day.

If it's for portrait or studio work then an S5, if it's for motorsport or something like that (which doesn't apply in your case) then a D200 is the better option.

Hmmm, judging by ebay's completed listing, you'll pay nearly twice the price for the Fuji...

All I was trying to say was the S5,has a very good jpeg output straight out of the camera, which is very good if you don't want to work in raw,not everybody does.
But it is also very good for raw files.

But money wise,I think you can get a better deal with the D200,S5 do seem to hold their prices better :)

Twice the price of a D2x, or a D200?

D200.

The S5 and d2x seem to going for similar money at around £400-500 ish.

I've had the Fuji S5 for years, before that I had the S3 and the S2 - IMO, seriously under-rated cameras that never appealed to the public and which didn't sell well at the prices Fuji thought they should fetch.

Basically the S5 is a D200 with Fuji sensor etc, it's a pretty good basic camera but the autofocus isn't particularly good.

The buffer is much better than the earlier models but is still awful compared, say, to my D700 and D3, so if you shoot in raw you'll often be stopping to let the camera catch up, and that isn't fun. Jpegs are fine, the buffer is adequate and the famed Fuji colours are liked by most people - although of course any camera can produce shots with a warm tone, or at least the shots can be warmed with a simple batch operation.

Image quality/resolution is fine for a cropped frame camera, although there is no comparison to the quality of my full frame cameras.

I'll tell you what though, despite my liking for the S5, if I had a choice of a decent D2X at the same price, I wouldn't even consider the S5 - what's not to like about a lightening fast camera designed for pro use?

Get a fuji or a d200.... But most importantly, the beer!
